Kent Man Charged with Robbing Downtown Store

A Kent man has been charged with robbing a downtown store while an Akron man has been charged with complicity in the robbery.

Kent Police arrested Shawn Cook, 35, and charged him with robbery, a second-degree felony, after responding to a panic alarm at Kent Jewelry Friday.

Police responded to the alarm just before 5 p.m. Friday and found the business owner had been assaulted and sustained minor injuries while two men tried to steal jewelry from the store.

Police arrested one of the suspects while he was trying to flee the scene, and the second later turned himself, according to Kent Police.

Justin Smith, 29, of Akron, OH, was charged with complicity to robbery, a second-degree felony.

Portage County Municipal Court Judge Barbara Oswick set Cook’s bond at 10 percent of $85,000 Monday with several conditions upon release, including that he not possess or consume alcohol or illicit substances and have no contact with the victim.

Cook has a preliminary hearing on the charges set for Friday.
