On the article Willow Street to Close Wednesday
Chris Mallin
2:01 pm on Saturday, March 16, 2013
ReplyI spend a lot of time near Main and Willow, and I expect to spend more time there when the Courthouse opens next year, so I try to keep track of the development. The statement in the news article is less than clear - "City and university officials are weighing the idea of permanently closing this stretch of Willow Street," and interested citizens should make their concerns known to City officials while that idea is being "weighed". First, "University" officials can weigh all they want, but have no authority to close a public street. University officials may ask City officials to close a street. It is not clear if this has been formally asked, although news reports since January have mentioned this possibility. The City professional staff has not made a recommendation to City Council to close the street. Some members of City Council, who are familiar with Willow Street, have made it clear that they are opposed to closing Willow Street, when citizens who were concerned because of the news reports of possible closing made those concerns known. The elected members of City Council have done a respectable job of protecting the citizens from whatever "elitist City gods" are considered to be a threat, and the members of City Council are only getting paid minimum wage for protecting the citizens. Local government works well if you participate, perhaps less well if you make up things to blame on those who do participate.

On the article PolitiFact: Ed FitzGerald 'Mostly False' in First Obama Supporter Claim

ReplyHow about if some Important Media Representative asks Mr. Fitzgerald "What date did you "endorse" Senator Obama's candidacy for President?", then posts Mr. Fitzgerald's answer (on Patch, of course) and see if any other person claiming to be a Cuyahoga County Official claims an endorsement at an earlier date? That might add some clarity to the discussion.

Ohio estate taxes will not be imposed after January 1, 2013. For deaths before January 1, there is effectively no tax on first $500,000 inheritance by surviving spouse, and no tax of first $300,000 or so inherited by descendants. From 1953 to the end of this year, 64% of Ohio estate taxes actually collected, were distributed to the township or municipality where the deceased had resided. That source of revenue to townships and municipalities ends December 31 because the Ohio General Assembly in 2011 adopted the tax reduction legislation proposed by Governor Kasich, which eliminated the estate tax effective January 1, 2013

ReplyHere's a 17-page economic study, published Sept 18, 2012, of US income tax policies over the past thirty years, that shows in detail that lower taxes for the wealthiest does NOT result in job creation, just in the wealthiest getting more wealthy in comparison to the rest of the population. http://www.epi.org/publication/ib338-fiscal-cliff-obstacle-course/

Reply@lyn - Yes, "Just what do you think the wealthier do with their cash - take it home and roll around in it on their bed? " is what some of America's largest businesses have done since President Obama's stimulus money began to take effect in 2010. Business profits are at historic highs, and the amount of cash that businesses have kept, NOT reinvested, has been at historic highs for the past two years. Because the taxes on PROFIT is LOW, businesses can show record profits which benefit their owners, at a very low cost. If the tax on profit was back to the level it was in 1990's, businesses would have to pay more tax on the PROFIT, so there is an incentive to re-invest the money in hiring more employees and buying more equipment, since those expenditures reduce the taxable profit. LOWER taxes on profit = FEWER jobs. HIGHER taxes on profit = MORE jobs.

ReplyI am reassured that, so far, no one has disputed that "low taxes on the highest incomes is a JOB-KILLER." Always a pleasure when I advocate a philosophical position and no one disagrees, particularly when I advocate to an audience as well-informed as the Patch readership. But, it's early yet.
