Kent, Portage Agencies Earn GAR Grants

GAR Foundation awards $95,000 to local groups

Three Kent and Portage County entities have a combined total $95,000 to support non-profit efforts this year thanks to the GAR Foundation. Locally, the foundation awarded: $20,000, to WKSU-FM 89.7 for its spring 2013 fund drive; $25,000, to United Way of Portage County; and $50,000 to the Kent State University Foundation for its last-chance scholarship program. For the Portage United Way, the grant is a challenge match, which means it is a $1 for $1 match to any new and or increased gifts from individual donors, corporations, and foundations. Portage Community Bank Sponsors United Way Annual Day of Caring

Volunteers lend a hand at Portage County service agencies for a day

Portage Community Bank is sponsoring the annual United Way “Day of Caring” for 2012. The Annual “Day of Caring” consists of volunteers from across the community lending a hand at local agency sites throughout Portage County. The event takes place Friday, Sept. 7. “This is a good opportunity for people in Portage County to get a tour of a United Way program and help with an important project for that agency” said, Steve Kleiber, President & CEO of United Way of Portage County. “We have supported this worthwhile cause since its inception and we are proud to be this year’s sponsor,” said Rick Coe, CEO of Portage Community Bank. Kent Elastomer Wraps Up Its First United Way Campaign

Fifty-year-old company headquartered in Kent raised nearly $5,000 for agency.

Kent Elastomer Products Inc. recently wrapped up its inaugural United Way campaign, raising more than $4,900 between its Kent headquarters and its facilities in Mogadore and Winesburg, Ohio. “We are fortunate to have companies in Portage County like Kent Elastomer Products” said Steve Kleiber, president and CEO of United Way of Portage County. “It means a lot to have local business behind our efforts to help people in Portage County.” The agency kicked off its 2011-12 campaign season in early September. United Way Behind on 2011 Campaign Goal, Looking for Donations

The United Way of Portage County's goal was $1,040,000.

The United Way of Portage County is still accepting donations to meet its campaign goal of $1,040,000. The 2011 campaign has raised $520,000. "Our campaign is progressing well to date," said President and CEO Steve Kleiber. "However we still need the community’s help to achieve goal." United Way funds 43 programs, including United Way’s 211 Portage, which is in financial crisis because of local and state government budget cuts. "Many organizations that we fund are struggling and I can’t over emphasize importance of making goal this year," said Kleiber.
