120 students in high school choir to perform 32 songs
Anticipation is brewing for the 43rd Annual POPs Concert at Theodore Roosevelt High School on May 17. Corey Fowler, director of choirs at Kent Roosevelt, will lead the show for the first time after taking over the program from Donna Crews. Fowler said all 32 songs that will be performed were chosen by the students. "It’s an interesting way how it’s set up," Fowler said. First, seniors in the high school choir choose 20 songs from material performed throughout the course of the year. Then, the seniors create a ballot that the entire choral ensemble votes on to whittle the selection down to eight songs that will be sung by the entire chorus. "This is a great way for the students to have their say because the rest of the year the normal choir…

Leila Mulla imprisoned in Baton Rouge for crime she was first arrested for one year after graduating from Roosevelt.
A Kent native was recently arrested and charged with the murder of a Baton Rouge businessman nearly three decades ago – just one year after her 1983 graduation from Theodore Roosevelt High School. Leila Mulla, 47, was extradited Dec. 21 from her Astoria, NY, home to Louisiana and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, where she remains today. The registered nurse – daughter of a now-deceased prominent Kent obstetrician – is facing charges of first-degree murder, criminal conspiracy and simple robbery in connection with the November 1984 murder of Gary Kergan, who was 29. Facing identical charges for the crime is Mulla’s former boyfriend, Ronald Dunnagan, 64, of Bossier City, LA. He is being held in the same Baton Rouge prison as …

Kent State University student journalists survey Ohio high schools on concussion policies, reporting and tracking
In sports today it's become one of the most widely reported and analyzed injuries: the concussion. Injuries to the brain don't just happen to NFL players. High school athletes on the volleyball court to the lacrosse field can experience a concussion. Journalism students in Kent State University's computer-assisted reporting class recently surveyed high schools around Ohio to find out if the schools track concussions, whether there is a formal policy in place for dealing with concussions and if the school trains coaches on how to deal with the injury. In Kent, at Theodore Roosevelt High School athletic administrators have a policy in place for handling concussions. The school also tracks concussion injuries and provides training for coaches…

Police respond after calls about a man with a gun near school campus; weapon found to be air gun
It's been a hairy 24 hours for students and parents of Theodore Roosevelt High School. Kent Police arrested a Kent man Monday afternoon after receiving calls that he was waving a gun in public near the high school campus. Kent Police Lt. James Prusha said five officers responded to a call at 2:41 p.m. Monday that a man was carrying a gun on North Mantua Street near Needham Avenue — several hundred feet from the school when classes were ending for the day. Prusha said officers encountered Todd J. Hyde, 19, of 1528 Benjamin Court, and found he was carrying an air-powered BB gun. "You couldn't tell it was a BB gun until you got right up on it," Prusha said. One parent who saw Hyde carrying the air gun called the high school, which in turn …

Parent volunteer group needs sponsors for 2012 season
The high school football season is fast approaching, and the Kent Roosevelt Rough Rider Booster Club needs your help supporting the team this fall. At this point, you may be asking yourself "What exactly does the football booster club do?" My response to you is: what don't they do? Mike Spicer, a longtime member of the booster club, ran down the short list for me of how the booster club keeps between 100 and 150 players (including freshmen) at their best for the 13-plus week season. "The booster club makes sure that the players have snacks and meals during the season to keep up their energy levels and get the nutrients into their systems that they need while working so hard," Spicer said in an email. "Whether it be fresh fruits, nuts, …

Susan Huang is headed to Dartmouth College after graduating from Kent Roosevelt with a 4.0 GPA
Susan Huang is sure about where she's headed. The valedictorian for Theodore Roosevelt High School's class of 2012 is going into a field of study she's been fascinated by since she was a child. She'll leave Kent for Hanover, NH, where she'll attend Dartmouth College — almost 13 hours away from home — and where she's already developed friendships with some like-minded incoming students. Perhaps most importantly, she's sure about herself. Kent Patch talked with the hopeful neurobiologist about life in Kent and future plans following today's graduation ceremony in the following Q&A. You can also read a copy of her commencement speech, which is attached to this article. Kent Patch editor Matt Fredmonsky: I understand you're going to Dartmouth …

Just FYI, this was the 44th annual concert, not the 43rd. The first one was in 1970 and the 40th was celebrated in 2009. It's the 43rd *anniversary* of the first one, but the 44th in order.   more ›
