Robin Turner resigns as at-large Kent City Councilman effective today
It wasn't an easy decision, but resigning as an at-large member of Kent City Council was just something Robin Turner had to do. Turner resigned from council effective today in order to officially retire as a member of the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System with more than 20 years as a public employee in the state. "It’s extremely difficult," Turner said. "It’s something I’m compelled to do. In order to retire I have to resign my (public) office. My preference would be to serve out my term, but unfortunately that’s not something I’m going to be able to do." Turner was appointed to council in January 2008 after the death of long-time councilman Bill Schultz, who was a close friend and mentor of Turner's. Ward 5 Kent City Councilwoman …

Roger Sidoti shifts his career from the halls of Roosevelt to council chambers.
Retired Theodore Roosevelt High School Principal Roger Sidoti has a new public role: Kent City Council member. The 40-year educator admitted to feeling "a little overwhelmed" after sitting through his first official meeting as a council member Wednesday, an at-large position he will hold through Dec. 31, 2013. Council spent three hours Wednesday evening interviewing 15 of 16 applicants (one was a no-show) for the seat vacated by Erik Valenta midway through his four-year term. Each candidate gave a short presentation, then answered questions asked by various council members. The public interviews ran about 10 minutes for each candidate, although one session was as short as six minutes and another as long as 16 minutes. Once council convened…

Kent's Salary Review Committee recommended in April that council members and the mayor's salaries remain the same
Kent City Council members and the mayor will not get a raise anytime soon, and they're OK with that. Council formed the Kent Salary Review Committee in October to determine whether members and the mayor should get a raise or be eligible for health care benefits available to city employees. After months of research, the committee made a recommendation to council in April that the pay should stay the same and that no benefits be provided. There are 10 members of council, including the mayor, six ward seats and three at-large members. Council members are paid $6,200 yearly and the mayor receives $6,600 yearly. Mayor Jerry Fiala said that once the recommendation was read during a regular council meeting, it's put on the record and no further…
