POLL: Davey Shooting Threat

Tell us if you think Kent City Schools administrators acted responsibly or should have responded differently.

Many parents of Davey Elementary students are not pleased with the way Kent City Schools administrators handled a recent threat of a public shooting at the school. The Davey Parent Teacher Organization held a meeting to discuss the issue and the district's response Wednesday. A teacher and parent overhead the threat, but it was not reported until the following day and many parents did not find out until it was reported by local media — days later. Some parents vented their frustrations on social media and were clearly upset over not being notified immediately about the threat. Read more about what parents had to say. Take our poll and tell us what you think.

It should be common practice nowadays that any incident such as this is reported immediately. Tell the principal & superintendent and if they deem the threat valid notify the parents. We do have the 'big brother' phone system which has already been used to notify us of everything from high winds and potential snow to threats at the school this school year. Use the woman's name though in every …   more ›

School Shooting Threat Reported at Davey Elementary

Kent police say Rachel A. Gauntner was charged with aggravated menacing on Feb. 1 after threatening to bring a gun to the school.

The teacher and another eyewitness reported Gauntner even referenced the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, said Kent Police Lt. Jim Prusha.  However, the teacher waited until the next morning (Feb. 1) to report the threat, saying she wanted to check with the school’s administration on how to proceed. “I think I understand with her working in the school system that she might want to run it by some co-workers…but, …
