Ohio Voters Heading to Polls in Droves Today

No major problems experienced in five Northeast Ohio counties; expect lines at some polling locations.

Ohio voters are heading to the polls today in droves under sunny, blue skies and there are essentially no Election Day problems being reported in five Ohio counties that are home to Patch websites. Stark County Jeanette Mullane, deputy director of the Stark County Board of Elections, said all 160 polling locations in the county opened on time this morning and have seen a steady stream of electors. “It’s been consistent voting all morning, which is what’s expected during a presidential election year,” she said. Stark County’s touch-screen voting machines are all operational and ready for use, said Mullane. But even if some weren’t, it wouldn’t be an issue for long. “Sometimes the machines get paper jams or other things that can be taken …

Voters Will Be Asked To Ante Up For New Police Station

Council to place 0.25 percent income tax hike request on November ballot.

Kent City Council is moving forward with plans to place a citywide income tax increase for a new police facility on the Nov. 6 ballot, but at a reduced rate of 0.25 percent from the 0.5 percent proposed in June. Councilman Wayne Wilson said Wednesday the percentage reduction is the lowest the city can possibly go and still achieve its goal of constructing a “long-overdue building” for the Kent Police Department. The proposed hike would permanently raise the city income tax rate from 2 percent to 2.25 percent. Council also modified its ordinance verbiage to indicate that funds generated by the measure – about $1.3 million annually – would be used for property acquisition, design, construction, maintenance and repairs, future expansion or …

Will there be any way for people who work in Kent but don't live there to be credited with the extra .25% tax? To my knowledge my city only credits 2% in tax reciprocity. Couldn't it be considered a form of theft to take money in this manner? Would it not be "Taxation Without Representation"?   more ›

What You Need to Know About the March 6 Primary

Presidential candidates are only a small part of the ballot.

It's a major election that will narrow fields of candidates in a number of state, regional, judicial and county races, as well as decide local issues in some communities. Here's what you need to know: Deadlines for Voters • You can register to vote until Feb. 6, which is 30 days before the election. • If you want to vote by mail, the Portage County Board of Elections has to have absentee ballots ready by Jan. 31. You have until noon on March 3 to apply for an absentee ballot from the board of elections.  • That ballot must be postmarked by March 5 and received by the board of elections by March 16 to be counted.  • In-person voting by absentee ballot at …

Ferrara Relieved now that Ward 1 Election is Over

Portage elections board holds recount after 7-vote margin of victory

The November election is finally over for Ward 1 Kent City Councilman Garret Ferrara, who was confirmed as the winner of the election for the Ward 1 seat after this morning's recount by the Portage County Board of Elections. Ferrara said that while he expected the Nov. 8 results to be upheld it was a big relief to have his win certified by the Portage County Board of Elections. "There's always that uncertainty," Ferrara said. "You know everyone kept saying they [the election results] don't change. But there's always that exception. You don't want to be that exception." Democratic challenger Melissa Long said she expected the results to favor Ferrara. "A recount very seldom shows a great deal of difference," Long said. She handed out a …
