University holding first of many public meetings today on idea of banning smoking on campus
Kent State University administrators will hold the first of several public meetings today to talk about the idea of banning smoking completely on all eight campuses. There are actually three meetings today on the Kent campus in the governance chamber in the Kent State Student Center at 10 a.m., 3 and 5:30 p.m. Kent State formed a steering committee to examine a recommendation from the Ohio Board of Regents, issued last summer, suggesting all public universities and colleges in Ohio ban the use of tobacco products on their campuses. The committee is expected to make recommendations for action based on the results of a campus survey, the public meetings and other input. A majority of Kent Patch readers think the university should ban tobacco…

Kent State has no immediate plans to swap or sell North Lincoln property
Editor's note: this story was updated at 1:54p.m. The former site of the Hillel at Kent State University on North Lincoln Street may not be the premiere alternate site for the Kent Wells Sherman House some want it to be. Jeff Ingram, director of Standing Rock Cultural Arts, suggested this week the vacant lot at 202 N. Lincoln St. would be a better fit for the historic Kent house than the space at 247 N. Water St. — next door to SRCA. Ingram made the suggestion at Wednesday's Kent City Council meeting and suggested university officials might be willing to work with the city to use the land for the Kent Wells Sherman House. Tom Euclide, Kent State’s associate vice president for Facilities Planning and Operations, said Ingram may have …

Kent State expands traditional summer concert band to include fall, spring semester performances
Traditionally a summer-only experience, the Kent State Communiversity Band is expanding to offer the program year-round. The band, an all-ages amalgamation of students, faculty, area music teachers and high school musicians, for years has been a summer-only affair with one performance held after weeks of rehearsal. Pat Grutzmacher, the band's director and associate professor of music at Kent State University, said for some time there's been interest among the band's members and alumni to run the program year-round. "When I conducted the Communiversity band this summer, a number of the musicians came up to me and said ‘you know, if this were a year-round band I would love to play in it," she said. So Grutzmacher got permission from the Kent…
