Food Drive nets 4,100 Items for Kent Social Services

Food pantry also received $665 in donations

Saturday’s “Fill-The-Truck” food collection at Kent Social Services was a huge success according to KSS Manager Christie Anderson.   Kent residents generously donated more than 4,100 food items and $665. Kent Mayor Jerry Fiala and Kent State University sorority sisters from Sigma Gamma Rho generated enthusiasm from passing drivers on South Water street and greeted donors.  Mayor Fiala noted that he was glad to help.   "Thanks to everyone who came out to meet the need," Fiala said. Anderson expressed her appreciation to the many donors, especially the students and faculty of Kent State's Collegeof Public Health. Kent, Ravenna Mayors Battle in Food Drive

Kent Social Services, Center of Hope in Ravenna benefit from food drive

It's that time of year again when the mayors of the cities of Kent and Ravenna battle to raise donation items for their local food pantries. Saturday Kent Mayor Jerry Fiala joined other volunteers to gather food items for Kent Social Services. Christie Anderson, director of Kent Social Services, said the count is not yet complete but she expects to see more than 3,000 items raised so far. Ravenna Mayor Joe Bica will hold a donation drive Saturday at the Center of Hope in Ravenna on S.R. 59. The mayor's challenge lasts through April 30. To make a donation in Kent simply visit Kent Social Services on South Water Street.

2nd Annual 'Bag Drop' Supports Kent Social Services

Kent State student food drive starts April 2

Following the success of last year's inaugural Bag Drop food drive by students at Kent State University the program is returning this spring to benefit the food pantry at Kent Social Services. Last year, students helped gather more than 4,000 food and personal care items — the pantry's largest one-time donation — through the bag drop system. Starting Tuesday, April 2, students in Deric Kenne's graduate class in the College of Public Health will deliver hundreds of empty grocery bags donated by Acme to houses in the Kent area and ask residents to fill the bags with non-perishable food and personal care items. Students will return on Saturday, April 6, at 10 a.m. to deliver the full bags to Kent Social Services. "Students participating in …

Toy, Food Drive for Kent Social Services

Several downtown businesses are collecting new toys and non-perishable foods to support Kent Social Services during the holiday season. You can drop off new, unwrapped toys and nonperishable food stuffs at the following locations: Sue Nelson Designs Woodsy's Music Baked in the Village Cafe Dominicks Ray's Place Hometown Bank Image Consultants Patricia Sparks, LPTA, LMT Pufferbelly Restaurant Kent Jewelry City Bank Antiques Franklin Square Deli In addition, the businesses will be sponsoring a mass collection day on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Hometown Plaza, where Woodsy's Music will provide a van for the collections.

400 Gather for Brunch Bunch in Kent

Annual fundraiser on Thanksgiving Day supports local charities

With gratitude the theme of yesterday’s holiday, an estimated 400 area residents of all ages gathered from 8 a.m. to noon at the Kent American Legion for an annual fundraiser to ensure others can have something to be thankful for. Held each year on Thanksgiving morning, Brunch Bunch raises money to help feed those in need. Through its auction of donated items and services, as well as a $3 admission fee, the event raised $37,000 in 2011 and more than $34,000 was raised Thursday. “We had another great year,” event chairwoman Michelle Hartman said. “Over the past 43 years, there’s probably been nearly $400,000 raised by the Brunch Bunch.” All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to four programs: Kent Social Services’ hot meals; The Center of…

Money will buy turkeys, gift cards for clients

The Kent Lions Club donated $1,000 to Kent Social Services this Thanksgiving so clients of the non-profit social service agency can enjoy the holiday. The donation will be used to buy turkeys, gift cards, groceries and other similar items for clients of the food pantry.

'Emma's Pajama Party' Puts PJs on Kids at Kent Social Services

Inaugural event organized by women of Kent Coterie

Have you ever wanted to wear your pajamas for a night on the town? Now you can thanks to the women of the Kent Coterie, and it's all for a good cause. The group, which maintains the Patton House, a historic Victorian home on West Main Street, is holding the inaugural Emma's Pajama Party Oct. 18 to help provide displaced children in Kent with pajamas. The ladies-only event will be held at The Rusty Nail with a dessert-first dinner, silent auction, photo booth, chair massages and other special treats — including a "Pajama-tini" signature drink made of cranberry juice, raspberry vodka, pineapple and sparkling champagne. Kent State Food Drive Nets 4,500 Items for Kent Social Services

Second food drive of March, run by Kent State health students, one of largest ever one-time pantry donations

The food pantry at Kent Social Services is filling up nicely thanks to a food drive organized and run by students at Kent State University. The students in Deric Kenne's spring course in the College of Public Health performed one of their last acts Thursday in a semester-long project to raise food donations for Kent's food pantry. With the help of volunteers, the students dropped off about 1,300 empty grocery bags on doorsteps around the city in March. Their goal was to get residents to fill the bags with donations, which the students then picked up a few days later. Kenne said they initially wanted to drop 2,500 empty grocery bags throughout the city, but they were still pleased with the effort after only delivering about half that amount…

Easter Baskets Donated for Kent Social Services

More than 50 children in Kent will have a happy Easter this year thanks to the Kent Junior Mothers. The volunteer service club met recently to wrap and deliver more than 50 baskets to Kent Social Services in time for the Easter holiday this weekend.

Food Drive Raises 1,600 Pounds for Kent Social Services

Competition with Ravenna helps restock Kent food pantry

A competition between the cities of Kent and Ravenna ended with Kent Social Services as the winner this weekend. Kent's food pantry received more than 1,600 pounds of food on Saturday after Kent Mayor Fiala issued a challenge to Ravenna Mayor Joe Bica to raise as much money and food for the Center of Hope, a food pantry in Ravenna, as Mayor Fiala hoped to see raised for Kent Social Services. Christie Anderson, director of Kent Social Services, said they received a total 1,674 pounds during the drive from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
