PTO President Jen Ingersoll said a meeting between school administration and parents Wednesday night was successful.
After news of a school shooting threat at Davey Elementary was released nearly a week after it happened, parents had some major questions for the school district. Many of those questions were answered by school officials, including Superintendent Joe Giancola and Principal Abby Bolton, during a PTO meeting Wednesday night. PTO President Jen Ingersoll said administrators described the incident and answered parents' questions and concerns. "The parents were so positive and supportive and the dialogue was calm," Ingersoll said. Many parents were upset over the lack of communication to them about the incident, wondering why they had to find out about the threat six days later through news reports. There is no increase to state funding for the district over the next two years.
The good news for Kent City Schools is it won't lose funding from the state over the next two years. The bad news is it won't get any more, either. The district is expected receive the same amount of state funding in 2014 and 2015, according to preliminary numbers from the Ohio Department of Education. In 2013 the district received $11.6 million from the state which will remain the same over the next two years if the state budget is approved as it is. The specific numbers for school funding in Gov. John Kasich's budget were released on Wednesday afternoon.

Roosevelt's hockey team will face Solon on Friday.
The Theodore Roosevelt High School hockey team advanced to the second round of the Baron Cup Playoffs Monday night. The Riders beat Elyria Catholic 4-2, according to the school's website. Kent's record is now 19-11-2 this season thanks to goals by Okko Boger, Matt Marniella, Gordie Fisher, and Scott Rainey. The second round of the playoffs will be Friday night against Solon.

Invisible Fence donated pet oxygen masks to the Kent Fire Department to save animals from smoke inhalation on Sunday.
The Kent Fire Department has new equipment that might just save your pet's life someday. Invisible Fence, a pet safety company, recently donated rescue oxygen masks to 12 local fire departments, including Kent. The mask donations are part of the company's Project Breathe, a nation-wide effort to equip fire stations across the U.S. and Canada with the special masks. Firefighters from around the area were in Stow to receive the donations and were trained on how to use the devices. Invisible Fence donated a total of 19 masks to help safety forces efficiently administer oxygen to a stricken animal. For more information visit www.invisiblefence.com/O2.

Kent State students and fans shared their thoughts on the Golden Flashes football coach leaving for Purdue University.
Kent State Football Coach Darrell Hazell's announcement that he was leaving for Purdue didn't come as a surprise to Evan Graening. Graening, a senior public relations major at Kent State University, said he knew it was a foregone conclusion. "To be honest it wasn't really a shock," Graening said Wednesday. "I know when we started winning, my friends and I knew if it wasn't this year, it would happen next year." Hazell held a press conference Wednesday morning announcing his decision to leave Kent State for the Big Ten team. Graening doesn't harbor any hard feelings and believes Hazell is making the best decision for himself. He does feel bad, however, for the players who are losing a terrific coach. The Tigers and Rough Riders girls soccer teams played through two extra periods without scoring, bringing the game down to penalty kicks.
It was a hard-fought match between Kent Roosevelt and Twinsburg that was ultimately decided by penalty kicks. Kent won the match with a final goal on the penalty kick, winning the battle 4-3. There were several close calls throughout regulation time and both extra periods, however, both defenses remained steadfast in allowing a score. Up next for Kent is a matchup against Solon, who defeated Cuyahoga Falls 4-0 Thursday. Solon and Kent will play on Oct. 23 in the district semi-final match. The Comets are the top seed in the district.

The board of trustees held an informal meeting to discuss the future at the new Twinsburg Regional Academic Center.
Kent State University President Lester Lefton thinks the university has the product in place, now he wants to focus on how to attract even more students to it. “We have to distinguish ourselves in unique ways,” Lefton said Tuesday, addressing the university's Board of Trustees at the new Twinsburg Regional Academic Center. “You can create product all day long but that’s not gonna’ convince people,” Lefton said. “They’ve got to believe in you.” The board of trustees held an informal meeting to discuss visions for the university's future and ways to establish these ideas.
