Crain, Water Intersection Striping Set

New intersection to get lanes painted on Friday

The Ohio Department of Transportation is planning to place pavement striping along the intersection of North Water Street, Crain Avenue and Lake Street Friday Friday morning. The work is expected to take about four hours. Traffic will be maintained with cones, but delays can be expected. The striping will be postponed until next week if it rains Friday.

Thank you! It's about time! I hope it doesn't rain. That intersection is an accident waiting to happen. And when will they clarify that those turning left out of Crain Ave. don't have to stop at the confusing stop light leading to the bridge? It is odd and I see plenty of people start going from Crain only to look up right out of the intersection and see and red light and stop.   more ›

POLL: Left Turns at Fairchild, S.R. 43 Intersection Sketchy

Illegal left turns from S.R. 43 onto bridge slow traffic; no left-turn arrow from Fairchild Avenue to S.R. 43 makes turning difficult

For a simple action, turning left at the intersection of S.R. 43 and Fairchild Avenue is getting a fair amount of attention from city officials — and for good reason. Whether or not you can make a left turn at the intersection depends on where you're coming from and where you're going. Right now it's illegal for drivers traveling south on S.R. 43 to turn left onto the new Fairchild Avenue Bridge. You can turn left from all other directions, but if you're heading east on Fairchild Avenue, turning north onto S.R. 43 is sometimes easier said than done. Kent Safety Director William Lillich said the city chose to prohibit left turns onto the bridge during road construction because there's only one southbound lane heading into the intersection. …

New Intersection to Greet Drivers After Fairchild Bridge Opens

Crain Avenue's intersection with North Water and Lake streets redesigned to curb traffic flow

A very different Crain Avenue will greet drivers turning off the new Fairchild Avenue Bridge when it opens to traffic this morning. Crain Avenue's intersection with Lake and North Water streets was redesigned as part of the bridge project to try and cut down on the number of drivers cutting through the Crain Avenue neighborhoods from S.R. 43 on their way to Kent State University and the eastern side of Kent. Kent City Engineer Jim Bowling said between 10,000 and 11,000 cars drive through the area on an average day. "One of the goals determined by the city in the planning stages of the project was to try to protect and preserve the residential area that’s in Crain Avenue from Water Street to S.R. 59," Bowling said. Officially, the …

I grew up in Kent and visit there every summer/fall, and I've watched the new bridge being built, wondering how this is going to improve traffic flow. Anyone coming from North Mantua St. or Fairchild Avenue, headed for the university, would have to be crazy to use the new bridge, rather than heading north on Mantua to Haymaker. Commuters are no longer welcome on Crain Avenue, so they must make a …   more ›
