Eric Johnston saved a young girl from drowning in the Cuyahoga River

The Kent State University student who saved a Kent girl from drowning in the Cuyahoga River will receive a Red Cross Hero Award for his efforts. Eric Johnston will be among the heroes recognized Monday at the Red Cross of Greater Cleveland's annual heroes luncheon. Todd and Jennifer Fisher nominated Johnston for the award after he pulled their 9-year-old daughter, Madelyn, from the river in May. Johnston will be among 15 honorees recognized Monday from across Northeast Ohio. Madelyn, 9, had been playing on some flat stones in the pool area just south of the Main Street Bridge and behind the Stone Arch Dam when she fell in. The roaring water quickly swept her through the old canal lock and downstream. Johnston sprinted down the boardwalk …

Kent State Student up for Red Cross Hero Award

Eric Johnston saved a Kent girl from drowning in the Cuyahoga River this summer

Kent residents can help a Kent State University student earn a Red Cross Hero Award for saving a girl from drowning in the Cuyahoga River this summer. Todd and Jennifer Fisher nominated Eric Johnston for the award after he pulled their 9-year-old daughter, Madelyn, from the river in May. "I would really love to see Eric win this award," Todd Fisher said. Madelyn was playing near the river in downtown Kent when she slipped and fell into the rushing water. Moments later, Johnston pulled her to safety on the river's west bank several hundred feet from where she fell in. To vote for Johnston, click on his nomination page on the Red Cross website. Dinner Celebrates Kent State Student's Life-Saving Reaction

Kent firefighters host dinner for Eric Johnston and the Fisher family

Kent firefighters cooked a special dinner Tuesday night to bring together a Kent State University student and the young girl he saved from the raging Cuyahoga River. The fire department recognized Eric Johnston for his bravery May 22, when he jumped into the Cuyahoga River to save 9-year-old Madelyn Fisher from being swept away. The dinner also brought together the Fisher family with Johnston and the fire crew that responded only moments after Johnston had helped Madelyn and her father, Todd, out of the rushing water. Madelyn had fallen in seconds earlier at Heritage Park and was swept downstream near the Silk Mill Apartments building, where Johnston waded in and pulled her out. Everyone escaped with minor cuts and scrapes. Todd Fisher …

Parents Grateful for Student who Saved Daughter from Drowning

Kent residents want to nominate Kent State student Eric Johnston for Red Cross hero award

Kent residents Todd and Jennifer Fisher are grateful for two things: their daughter Madelyn's life and the young man who saved it. Madelyn was playing near the Cuyahoga River in downtown Kent Sunday when she slipped and fell into the rushing water. Moments later, Kent State University student Eric Johnston pulled her to safety on the river's west bank several hundred feet from where she fell in. Johnston said it all happened so fast that he and the Fishers simply parted ways afterward without even exchanging names. "I will always remember his face and his incredible kindness," Todd Fisher said of Johnston today. "I am forever deeply indebted to him and the city of Kent safety forces who responded so quickly to the incident. It has changed …

Girl Saved from Drowning by Kent State Student

Senior Eric Johnston pulls girl from Cuyahoga River Sunday

Eric Johnston knew he had a chance to save her, but time was of the essence. He raced the swollen rapids, sprinting down the boardwalk from Heritage Park to River Edge Park along the Cuyahoga River in downtown Kent Sunday afternoon. Moments before, he watched as a little girl tumbled into the river and was swept through the old canal lock next to the dam. "Me and a group of friends decided to go down and walk by the river since it was nice out (Sunday)," Johnston said. "My friend John and I were standing on top of the dam there and I saw the little girl fall in backwards. The only thing I could manage to get out at that point was ‘girl in the water!’” Johnston's friends called police as he ran downstream to an area where he knew the river …
