No Prior OSHA Citations for PARTA Contractor

Lockhart Concrete employed man who died after transit center construction accident

The firm that employed a Barberton man who died after a construction accident at the PARTA site last week has no prior citations from the U.S. Department of Labor. The Cleveland office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident that killed Russell Hirschfelt, 49, on March 27. Hirschfelt was employed by Lockhart Concrete, one of the sub contractors working on the $26 million transit center project in downtown Kent. According to OSHA, Akron-based Lockhart Concrete has no prior citations from the labor department for safety or other job-site violations. Work at the site continues but stopped temporarily the day after Hirschfelt died in the hospital as a result of his injuries. He was walking between a …

OSHA investigating cause of death; PARTA suspends work on project

Editor's note: this story was updated at 11:30 a.m. and again at 7:20 p.m. A construction worker has died following an accident at the PARTA Kent Central Gateway transit center job site Tuesday morning, a PARTA official confirmed this morning. The man was identified as Russell Hirschfelt, 49, of Barberton, by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office. Hirschfelt died just after 6 p.m. Tuesday due to injuries sustained in the accident. The accident happened just before 11 a.m. Tuesday when Hirschfelt was walking between slabs of concrete and a trackhoe when the excavator moved and pinned him between the machine and concrete.
