Visions for Vacancies: Dr. Greenbee's Acorn Alley Spot

Patch's Visions for Vacancies asks for reader input on empty commercial spaces

Change is coming to Acorn Alley following the temporary closure of retail shop Dr. Greenbee. The eco-friendly retailer announced plans in November to recipients of its email newsletter the store will relocate to a larger space in Kent with better accessibility and more parking. A specific space has yet to be announced publicly. "We will miss our friends in Acorn Alley but feel this is the best decision for our customers," the newsletter states. "We are looking at a few locations in Kent and plan to reopen May 15." In the meantime, that means their old spot off of Burbick Way (formerly Alley 4) could be available to the next Kent entrepreneur. We want to know what kind of business or use would be a good fit in the building and serve Kent's …

What Should Replace TLC Liquor?

Patch's Visions for Vacancies asks for your input on vacant commercial properties

For several weeks now Kent residents on the west side of town have had to buy their hard liquor elsewhere following the closure of TLC Liquor on West Main Street. Dennis Ginty, Deputy Communications Director for the Ohio Department of Commerce, said in an email TLC Liquor transferred its contract liquor agency permit to Giant Eagle, at 4300 Kent Road in Stow, OH, on Oct. 31. "TLC still has retail permits to sell carryout beer (C1 permit), carryout wine and mixed beverages (C2 permit), and tasting privileges which allow them to sell 2-ounce samples of beer, wine and mixed beverages (D8 permit)," Ginty said. However, the liquor store space has been emptied and all the shelves and coolers left bare. That means the space is likely to be …

POLL: Best Fit for Main Street Tavern Building

Patch's Visions for Vacancies asks for reader input on vacant commercial properties

For more than a year the former Main Street Tavern has been closed. State officials revoked the vendor's license for the business and nearly revoked its liquor permit. The owners of the former bar and restaurant also owed thousands of dollars in back taxes. We want to know what kind of business or use would be a good fit in the building and serve Kent's western neighborhoods well. Vote in our poll to pick your favorite use, as suggested by Kent Patch readers.

No Big Changes Planned to Parking Lot Downtown

Patch's Visions for Vacancies examines vacant commercial properties and their redevelopment possibilities

Yet another downtown block can expect to see some things change and others stay the same during the next two years as city officials examine the redevelopment of the existing Kent Municipal Courthouse. Three elements — the existing courthouse, its adjacent parking and the current Buffalo Wild Wings building — all will see changes in the next two years and are all located within the downtown block bordered by South Water Street, Erie Street, West College and Franklin avenues. Despite surrounding changes, the parking lot will remain largely unchanged. As part of the new courthouse project, city officials will acquire the existing courthouse building from Portage County officials and its adjacent parking lot at the corner of Franklin and West…

POLL: Best Choice For Downtown Parking Lot

Patch's Visions for Vacancies asks for your input on empty commercial properties.

Last week we asked for your thoughts on what should become of what is currently a parking lot at the corner of West College and Franklin avenues, adjacent to the Kent Municipal Courthouse and BW3. Below you'll find a poll crafted from your suggestions. Vote for your favorite choice. Here's a little background on the property: As part of the deal to keep the new Kent courthouse downtown the city will take ownership from Portage County of the existing courthouse building and the parking lot adjacent to it at the corner of Franklin and West College avenues. One interesting element to the area's potential redevelopment is the fact Buffalo Wild Wings will vacate its existing location next to the parking lot and behind the courthouse to move …

Well, Teresa, downtowns started dying when populations grew and parking got to be a real problem. That was before there were anything like boutiques. You could buy almost anything you wanted in downtown Kent. All daily household needs were available. Once in a while my mother went to O'Neils and Polsky's in Akron. As i remember in the fifties there were five drugstores, four grocery stores, three…   more ›

Parking Lot Could Pose Redevelopment Possibilities

Patch's Visions for Vacancies asks for your input on empty commercial properties

Right now it's filled with cars most days, but a parking lot adjacent to the Kent Municipal Courthouse could be redeveloped in the next few years. And we want to know what you think would best fit or prove most successful in the space. As part of the deal to keep the new Kent courthouse downtown the city will take ownership from Portage County of the existing courthouse building and the parking lot adjacent to it at the corner of Franklin and West College avenues. One interesting element to the area's potential redevelopment is the fact Buffalo Wild Wings will vacate its existing location next to the parking lot and behind the courthouse to move into Acorn Corner. That means in a few short years the old courthouse, the parking lot and the …

Put a restaurant in the old BW3 building. Not too big, not too small. Let it generate income, employ people, and pay taxes to the city of Kent. That building has been home to many bar and grills over the past 50 years. The Stone Jug and Haymakers come to mind. Lots of happy memories between those walls for many of us. Let a restaurant move in and keep building memories. Many people have told me …   more ›

Owner of Former Funeral Home Going Solo

City not sought for assistance in redeveloping East Main Street building; Patch's Visions for Vacancies ask for your input on vacant commercial properties

The city of Kent is mostly hands-off when it comes to the redevelopment of a former funeral home and book store on East Main Street. The property at 1005 E. Main St., formerly an extension of the now closed DuBois Book Store and, before that, the Wood-Kortwright Funeral Home, has been for sale for months. But the owner is largely taking it upon himself to find a buyer or someone to redevelop the property, city officials have said. Kent Economic Development Director Dan Smith said the property owner, Howard DuBois, hasn't divulged who has shown an interest in the property. "And property owners don’t have to. They have property rights," Smith said. "He has been in negotiations with a lot of folks. Howard has spoke in general terms here with …

POLL: Best Choice for Former Funeral Home, Book Store

Patch's Visions for Vacancies asks for reader input on vacant commercial properties

Earlier this week we asked for your thoughts on what kind of business or organization would succeed in the former former funeral home on East Main Street across from Kent State University. You responded in spades. Below you'll find a poll crafted from your suggestions. Vote for your favorite choice. Here's a little background on the property: the empty building at 1005 E. Main St. was formerly owned and operated by Wood Kortwright Funeral Home, which sold the property for $500,000 to DuBois in 2005, according to the Portage County Auditor. DuBois operated the space as an extension of their book store briefly until the main location closed last summer. The building has a little more than 6,000 finished square feet and stands on a lot that …

What Would Fit Well in Former Book Store, Funeral Home

Patch's "Visions for Vacancies" asks for your input on vacant commercial properties

Last an extension of the closed DuBois Book Store, the former funeral home on East Main Street across from Kent State University is for sale. Patch wants to know: what do you think would be a good business for that location? The empty building at 1005 E.
