George Danhires' proposal for a veterans memorial at the Kent Central Gateway will be built and installed at the site this year
A Kent artist whose work already has a prominent place downtown has been chosen to create a veterans memorial at PARTA's Kent Central Gateway transit center, which opened this month on Erie Street. Danhires, who created the Bicentennial Sculpture that stands on Franklin Avenue near the gazebo, was selected from three finalists to create a bronze sculpture on a site at the eastern end of the transit center property. His creation for the Bicentennial Sculpture, dedicated in September 2011, was developed via a lost-wax procedure that will be used again to create the veterans memorial. PARTA's selection committee chose Danhires' proposal in December. His contract stipulates the sculpture will be delivered in time for Veterans Day on Nov. 11. …

Kent, Ravenna residents among final 3 groups competing to design new memorial at downtown transit center
Ask Brinsley Tyrrell what he envisions for a veterans memorial at the new Kent Central Gateway transit center downtown, and you likely won't get an answer. "I'm keeping that under wraps for now," he said. The 71-year-old Ravenna artist is among the three semifinalists competing to design the new Veterans Memorial at PARTA's new center under construction in Kent. Along with Tyrrell, Kent artist George Danhires is among the semifinalists. Danhires designed and installed the Kent Bicentennial Sculpture. The bronze sculpture, dedicated in 2011, stands on Franklin Avenue north of the Pufferbelly and depicts images from Kent's history. Aside from the two local men, three residents of Georgia are working together on their design and comprise the …

$100,000 for design, fabrication and installation of art
PARTA is looking for artists interested in creating a veterans memorial to be erected at the site of the new Kent Central Gateway transit center downtown. In it's call for artists, the transit agency indicates the memorial is meant to honor past, present, fallen and POW-MIA veterans from all service branches of the U.S. military. "This Memorial shall be timeless in its execution, not specific to any war or conflict period," the call for entry states. "The goal is to create a memorial that displays the depth of appreciation the public has for the sacrifices made by our military throughout time. In part, the final design solution shall incorporate an American flag and pole and a remembrance of each service branch in the form of a flag or …

The transit agency is partnering with the city and Kent State University to include a veterans memorial as part of the project discussion last year about renaming a park in Kent in honor of 2007 Theodore Roosevelt High School grad Adam Hamilton, who died while serving in Afghanistan. Bryan Smith, director of planning for PARTA, said they are planning an extensive process with public involvement from the start regarding the search for artists and their proposals. "Prior to issue the call for entry we will have a public meeting inviting people to critique the call for entry," he said. "In …
