Theodore Roosevelt High School will host dinner for family of student who died unexpectedly last week
The passing of Devon Conwell, a sophomore at Theodore Roosevelt High School, makes every mother’s heart break. My family has known Devon since he attended Holden Elementary School, and he often visited with us. Devon was loved by every member in my family; my daughter loved his smile, my husband coached him in flag football, and my son was his basketball and football teammate growing up. The vigil that was held for Devon last Thursday, April 18, was a moving tribute, and a testament to the all of the lives that Devon touched during his short time with us. There was such a sense of love and community in Kent that night, as everyone pulled together to mourn the loss of Devon. Coaches, administrators, and guidance counselors from both Stanton…

Roosevelt grad Leila Mulla charged in murder of a Baton Rouge businessman
Leila Mulla, a 1983 Theodore Roosevelt High School graduate, has pleaded not guilty in the murder of a Baton Rouge, LA, businessman. Mulla, 47, of Astoria, N.Y., recently entered the plea in a Baton Rouge courtroom. She has been charged in the November 1984 murder of Gary Kergan, who was 29. She was arrested in December and extradited to Louisiana on the murder charge. Mulla was initially arrested in 1984 in the case but prosecutors did not prosecute due to a lack of evidence. Investigators reopened the case recently after retesting blood found in 1984 in an apartment shared by Mulla and her boyfriend, Ronald Dunnagan, 64, of Bossier City, LA, who also is facing charges in Kergan's death. Kergan’s brother, Ted, issued the following …

Police respond to call after student reports unusual boxes outside atrium entrance
Fortunately reported suspicious packages found outside Theodore Roosevelt High School this morning turned out to be a false alarm. Jim Soyars, director of business services for Kent City Schools, said this morning a student arriving early to the high school told school staff about several packages wrapped as Christmas gifts left outside the main entrance near the cafeteria. "They were sitting all wrapped up right in front of a trash can," Soyars said. "Obviously that was very suspicious." High school administrators couldn't account for the packages, so they called Kent Police to make sure the packages weren't some kind of threat. K9 units responded and students, who were arriving for the start of school at about 7 a.m., were directed away …

Students meet $5,000 goal; donations planned to local veterans groups
Two years and more than $10,000 later and a library is taking shape in Vietnam thanks to some enterprising students at Theodore Roosevelt High School. Members of Project Vietnam at the high school recently doubled their $5,000 goal to build a library at Kim Dong Elementary School in in the Phi Ninh district, Quang Nam province. Tanya Titus, the high school club's adviser, said because the students exceeded the $5,000 construction cost goal they also plan to donate a little extra to the students in Vietnam to furnish the new library. Because the students raised more than $10,000, which was more than expected, they also plan to donate the rest to local veterans organizations, including: the Freedom House veterans transitional housing; Miss …

Chris Carman has helped obtain or administer almost $80,000 in grants for Kent City Schools
Chris Carman admits he's not some expert grant writer. "I've been really fortunate," he said. Fortunate to the tune of about $77,000. A science teacher at Theodore Roosevelt High School, Carman has either helped administer or apply for grants totaling almost $80,000 since 2007. Each grant included an environmental component. This year, Carman got a $5,000 grant from the Dominion Foundation for his submission "Water, Water Everywhere." He used the award to expand on his first grant — a $5,000 gift from the Kent Environmental Council in 2007 — for water quality testing. The KEC money bought LabQuest probes to teach students how to measure water quality in any body of water. The kits were used on Breakneck Creek and Fishcreek. The Dominion …
