All five released on bond
Four Kent men and a Euclid resident have been indicted on charges they broke into a residence on University Drive in December. A Portage County grand jury indicted the following five men, whom the Record-Courier reported are all students at Kent State University. All five men were charged with breaking into a residence at 126 University Drive on Dec. 1, according to Portage County court records. They were indicted on one count each of burglary, a second-degree felony. They were all released on bond on the condition they have no contact with the three complaining victims. Their trials are scheduled to start in April. University officials typically review cases in which students are charged with crimes to determine if academic penalties, …

Kent council votes to wait before acting on neighborhood request to close sidewalk section
A decision to close a sidewalk on High Street to try and stop late-night foot traffic in the neighborhood was delayed by Kent City Council Wednesday night. Council members voted unanimously Wednesday to wait until after construction is finished on the new, 596-bed “Province at Kent” student apartments before acting on a recommendation to close a portion of the High Street sidewalk near the eastern end. Construction is expected to wrap up next summer in time to open the apartments for the fall 2012 semester at neighboring Kent State University. The Kent Planning Commission made the recommendation earlier this summer after a High Street resident suggested the sidewalk closure. “The (foot) traffic that’s there now has been happening for a …

Programs rely on parents, family members to keep activites rolling
After students hop on the bus to begin their days, parents have a number of ways to continue helping them learn. At every school in the district, family members who volunteer their time keep things humming through a variety of programs and organizations. At Franklin Elementary, volunteers with Franklin for Our Planet, a subcommittee of its Parent-Teacher Organization, plan “earth-friendly” activities to raise students’ awareness of ways to help the environment. During the Scholastic Book Fair, from Sept. 23 to Sept. 30, an empty classroom at Walls Elementary becomes a hub of activity, said Walls PTO President Sherry Tessman. "We have volunteers needed for setup, as well as packing up (books). It’s a huge undertaking, and having people come…

Classes began this week for Kent grade-school students
With school back in session, here are some reminders to update families who want to ensure students are ready for the classroom. The Kent City School District mailed individualized information packets last week to registered students throughout the district. School-supply lists vary and are determined by each school and, at the high school level, are distributed in the classroom by each teacher. Classes and orientation started Wednesday for kindergarten, elementary and middle school students, as well as for freshmen and students new to Theodore Roosevelt High School. Classes started today for sophomores through seniors at the high school. For kindergarten students, a set of vaccination shots is required to begin school, while students at …
