Patch's 'Visions for Vacancies' asks for your input on empty commercial storefronts
A large, prime piece of real estate remains vacant between downtown Kent and the Kent State University campus since DuBois Book Store closed in June 2011. In a candid interview with Kent Patch, landowner Howard DuBois said he was interested in redeveloping the property either through a partnership with a developer or by selling the land outright. It's been almost a year since the book store closed, and the land remains vacant. Cleveland developer Fairmount Properties – you may recognize the name, as they're partnering with the city on the downtown redevelopment work — indicated in October it may buy the property from DuBois, but the property remains under his sole ownership. Patch wants to know what kind of business, organization or …

Residents asked for move to try and stop students from walking through their yards
Kent officials will take a close look at the idea of vacating an unpaved portion of High Street at its eastern end as a means to curb late-night student foot traffic in the residential neighborhood. High Street resident Walt Adams first suggested the idea to the Kent Planning Commission in response to approval of plans for the Province at Kent 596-bed student housing complex on South Lincoln Street. Adams said he would like to see the eastern end of the street vacated and left to return to a natural vegetative state in addition to construction of barriers or installation of more landscaping to try and buffer the neighborhood from the new rental complex. The proposal includes the suggestion to close a sidewalk that connects High Street to …

Kent zoning board grants variances for clubhouse at planned 596-bed apartment complex
The first step toward site plan approval of a 596-bed apartment complex on South Lincoln Street took place Monday night when the Kent Board of Zoning Appeals approved variances for the project's clubhouse. Columbus-based Edwards Communities Development Co. got approval of two variances for a 7,000-square-foot clubhouse and leasing office as part of "The Province at Kent" student housing complex. The clubhouse, considered an accessory building under city code, is subject to a maximum 15-foot height and a minimum 60-foot setback from the road right of way — in this case, Summit Street. The developer asked for, and received, a 30-foot variance from the right of way setback and a 14-foot variance from the building height to allow the clubhouse…
