Portage County is becoming a popular location for sobriety checkpoints this year. The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced Thursday morning that Portage will again be the site for a drunken driving checkpoint Friday evening. Portage County one of several counties with checkpoints on St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day ended unhappily for 17 people who left Kent and drove south late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Seventeen drivers were charged with drunk driving Saturday after being stopped at a sobriety checkpoint on S.R. 43 just south of Kent. The checkpoint, run by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Portage County Sheriff's Office and Brimfield Police, screened 582 cars total between 10 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday. Of those 582 cars, 23 cars were diverted, according to the highway patrol. A total 25 people were arrested. There will be an OVI checkpoint somewhere in the area this week, but the Ohio State Highway Patrol has not announced the location or day yet. The patrol announced in a press release Monday morning from Ravenna that sometime in the next seven days a sobriety checkpoint will be set up to "deter and intercept impaired drivers." The day before the checkpoint is set up, the county where it will take place will be announced. The morning of the checkpoint, the location will be announced.
