Safety School Class of 2012 Graduates!

About 65 soon-to-be kindergarteners honed safety skills at week-long school run by Kent Junior Mothers.

Numerous graduation exercises are staged each year in Kent, but none are quite as adorable as the ceremony that marks the end of Kent Junior Mothers’ Safety School. Commencement was held Friday at Walls Elementary School for about 65 soon-to-be-kindergarteners who spent the week learning vital safety skills regarding stranger awareness, guns, bicycles, buses, cars, water, weather, railroads, fire, playgrounds and more. The youngsters sported T-shirts in colors representing the elementary schools they will attend this fall: green for Davey, orange for Longcoy, red for Franklin, blue for Walls and Holden and yellow for St. Patrick's School/CDC. Raffle Raises Support for Kent Junior Mothers

Event covers costs of volunteer group's annual Safety School

Members of Kent Junior Mothers and other Kent residents gathered Saturday for a night of fun — and fundraising. The Kent Junior Mothers 5th Annual Reverse Raffle, held at the Rusty Nail, raised money for the volunteer group's efforts to operate Safety School for incoming kindergarteners at Kent City Schools. Aside from Safety School, the 66-year-old organization conducts other volunteer efforts throughout the year, including creating and delivering Easter baskets to Kent Social Services, clearing trash and plant debris at Plum Creek Park and providing refreshments at the annual Festival of Lights. I attended Safety School when I was 5. I was a volunteer from age 10 to 16. I'm an adult with my own child now. I am deaf, blind and physically impaired. If you plan to do any disability awareness, I'd be happy to participate.   more ›

Kent Junior Mothers Bet on Raffle to Support Safety School

5th annual raffle is club's sole fundraiser for yearly school

It's a little-known secret that Kent's annual Safety School for incoming kindergarten students happens magically each summer thanks to sprite little elves. I'm joking, of course. The Kent Junior Mothers sponsor the annual event, which averages 100 students who come to learn about traffic safety, fire safety, gun safety, bus safety, "stranger danger" and a whole host of other good-to-know topics. Safety School is a monumental effort put on by a group with a membership that's been steadily dwindling over the past few decades. Just how monumental? Safety awareness program all this week at Walls Elementary

For more than 30 years, the Kent Junior Mothers, a volunteer service organization in Kent, has sponsored Safety School for Kent's kindergarteners. Safety School is a program in which children entering kindergarten are introduced to safety awareness in their daily lives through visits at a weeklong camp from police, firefighters, bus drivers and other helpful service folks. The program continues through the week at Walls Elementary School with graduation ceremonies Friday.

The Kent Junior Mothers is looking for volunteers to help run the 2011 Safety School at Walls Elementary School July 11-15. For more information, read the press release issued by the group below: Kent Junior Mothers will once again host its largest service project, Safety School, this year at Walls Elementary School from July 11-15th.
