Aurora Beats Kent, Advances to Regional Championship Game

The Greenmen beat the Rough Riders 27-13.

The Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders were tied 13-13 with the Aurora Greenmen after the first half of the second-round Division II high school football playoff game Friday night. But Kent couldn't respond to two more Aurora touchdowns in the second half, and the Rough Riders lost to the Greenmen 27-13 to bring a heartbreaking end to an almost perfect season. Both teams had maintained a 10-1 record going into Friday's game. Kent beat Ellett 24-7 last week in the first round of the playoffs, while Aurora beat New Philadelphia 25-32. Friday's score means Aurora will next play Chardon — who also advanced in the playoffs Friday, beating Kenton 34-15. The game Nov. 17 will determine the regional championship.

Lacrosse Team Dedicates Season to Fallen Hero Adam Hamilton

Team to present Hamilton's parents with his jersey at Friday night game

Last year the entire Kent community mourned the loss of 2007 Theodore Roosevelt High School graduate Adam Hamilton, who died in May after his Army unit was attacked in Afghanistan. What some may not know is that Hamilton was a star on the lacrosse field for the Rough Riders. This year the high school lacrosse team dedicated its season in honor of Hamilton, and tonight the team will present team jerseys to his parents Nancy Hamilton and Scott and Connie Hamilton at the high school at about 7 p.m. The players also are wearing warm-up outfits beneath their jerseys that were designed in Hamilton's memory. The lacrosse star scored a total 100 goals, made 104 assists and earned 204 points in his 56-game career at Kent. Here's what high school …

Rough Riders Start Hockey Season with Win

Kent Roosevelt beat Cleveland Benedictine 10-0

Ten different Rough Riders tallied on the score sheet with seniors Tom Fisher (4 goals) and Bob Danner (2 goals, 2 assists) and sophomore Scott Rainey (1 goal, 3 assists) leading the way with four points each. Roosevelt goalie Nate Grootegoed stopped the twelve shots he faced in notching his first shutout of the season. Fitting Send-Off for a Great Season

Rough Riders post-season football ended Friday in a tough loss to Walsh

The 2011 Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders football season was one for the history books. The team's season may have ended Friday in a 49-14 post-season loss to Walsh Jesuit High School, but 2011 was a stellar season nonetheless. The Riders, who finished 10-2, saw their first-ever playoff victory this season. And they beat long-time rival Ravenna in nailbiting fashion. The community gave the team a great send-off Friday, so we thought we'd share some photos and video from the rally as a tribute to a great season. Congrats!

Roosevelt Senior Fighting Cancer Nominated for 'Rudy' Award

Ryan Anderson is up for the award given to high school football players who inspire their team

Don't let Ryan Anderson fool you. His battle with bone cancer may force him to use a crutch to get around occassionally, but that hasn't stopped him from attending every home Rough Riders football game this season. Better still, the osteogenic sarcoma in his femur couldn't stop his latest accomplishment — being crowned 2011 Theodore Roosevelt High School Homecoming King this past weekend. Now his mother, coach and supporters are hopeful for another big success — 2011 Rudy Award Winner. Anderson's coach, John Nemec, nominated the former star lineman for the award this fall that celebrates "outstanding young athletes — not because of their statistical performance, but because of their ability to inspire teammates, classmates and communities…
