Crash on River Bend Boulevard involving 3 high school juniors puts driver safety back in the spotlight
School was just letting out when we heard the sirens. Cell phones and Facebook lit up, and within minutes everybody in our small town knew three 11th-grade girls had crashed their car in a dogwood-lined neighborhood across from the school. As stunned students stood nearby, a medical helicopter landed in the school parking lot to transport the one passenger who was ejected from the vehicle. A second passenger and the driver were cut out of the car and transported to other hospitals. Parents, friends and fellow students — we held our breath as we waited to hear the girls would be OK. They had multiple broken bones. They might not be dancing at prom in three weeks. But they would eventually return to normal activities — and to corroborate …

Police believe speed may have been a factor in Thursday afternoon crash
Editor's note: this story was updated at 9:25 a.m. Three junior girls at Theodore Roosevelt High School were injured Thursday afternoon when the car they were riding in rolled over on River Bend Boulevard. All three were transported to Akron area hospitals after the Volkswagen they were riding in rolled over at 2:44 p.m. just east of the River Bend bridge Thursday. Kent Patch is witholding the names of the victims pending official confirmation. One of the passengers was ejected during the crash and was taken by a Metro Life Flight medical helicopter to an Akron Hospital. The other two had to be cut free from the wreckage by firefighters using the Jaws of Life. A post on one of the girl's facebook pages indicated she had a broken shoulder, …

All after-school activities canceled; speed possible factor in crash
Editor's note: this story was updated at 5:15 p.m. Three people were injured after the car they were riding in rolled over on River Bend Boulevard this afternoon. One of the crash victims was flown via Metro Life Flight medical helicopter to Akron Children's Hospital. Kent Fire Chief James Williams said the single-car crash happened just east of the bridge on River Bend Boulevard at about 3 p.m. Williams said all three were transported to area hospitals. The extent of the victims' injuries are unknown at this time. Kent Police Lt. Paul Canfield said one of the car's passengers was ejected in the crash. "Speed may have been a factor," Canfield said. The Roosevelt senior is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a March rollover crash in downtown Kent
Car accident victim Zach Marlow will be in attendance today to watch his fellow Theodore Roosevelt High School classmates receive their diplomas, but he won’t get to cross the stage himself. The 18-year-old has been unable to attend school since March 17, when he was critically injured in a rollover car accident near the Crain Avenue Bridge in downtown Kent. He was a back-seat passenger in a classmate’s Jeep Liberty during a lunch break from school when the car spun out and rolled over. During the accident, Zach was thrown from the vehicle and became trapped beneath it. He spent six weeks at Akron City Hospital, most of that time in the intensive care unit. On April 29 he was transferred to the traumatic brain injury unit at Edwin Shaw …

Families of students Zach Marlow and Ryan Anderson will benefit from Wednesday's event
“Roosevelt family” is a well-known catchphrase at Theodore Roosevelt High School – one that will be exemplified during a benefit dinner Wednesday. Students in the Riders Taking Action class want to help two of their Roosevelt family members by raising funds through a spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction set for 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Roosevelt cafeteria. Tickets will be $10 at the door. Proceeds will be divided between the families of Ryan Anderson, a junior who was diagnosed with bone cancer in early April, and Zach Marlow, a senior who was critically injured in a March 17 rollover car accident. The benefit dinner is the brainchild of the 24 students enrolled in this semester’s Riders Taking Action class, taught by advanced …

Zach Marlow's mom, Laura, talks about her son's accident and his slow recovery
Life can change drastically in the blink of an eye. Just ask the Marlow family. Zach Marlow remains in the intensive care unit at Akron City Hospital – more than three weeks after a rollover accident in which he was critically injured. Three other Theodore Roosevelt High School seniors escaped with minor injuries, and Zach's good friend, Jake Prunty, is recovering from a broken vertebrae. Zach, 18, was riding in a classmate’s Jeep Liberty during a lunch break from school when the car spun out and rolled over in downtown Kent. During the accident, Zach was thrown from the vehicle and became trapped beneath it. His mother, Laura Marlow, said the family has been on an emotional roller coaster since then, finding hope one day and despair the …

Our Kent Patch Moms Council members offer suggestions for getting your child to wear their seat belt
Seat belts are an interesting thing. They can save your life. But for teenagers, they are either easy to forget or can make you look "uncool." There's no better example of how important a seat belt can be than last week's rollover crash involving five seniors at Theodore Roosevelt High School. Jake Prunty, one of the five students involved in the crash, said only two were wearing seat belts. They escaped with minor injures. Prunty and his friend, Zach Marlow, were not wearing their seat belts, and they suffered the worst injuries. Prunty is out of the hospital — but in pain and wearing a back brace for at least 12 weeks — and Marlow remains hospitalized. So how do you get your children to wear their seat belts? It's easy when you're in the…
Kent senior talks about crash that injured him and four friends last week
Jake Prunty is lucky. He could be sitting in a wheelchair, or worse. Instead, he was released from the hospital one day after a rollover crash in downtown Kent injured him and four friends, one seriously. Now, the only obvious sign of his being in the crash is a special back brace — and the lingering physical and emotional pain. Even a fractured L1 vertebra couldn't stop him from returning to school on Friday to a barrage of hugs, questions and good wishes from his fellow students and administrators at Theodore Roosevelt High School. “I tell everybody 'don’t squeeze me tight, just give me a pat,'” he joked. “I went on Friday to show everyone that I was all right and that I wasn’t paralyzed, because there was a rumor going around school …

One victim remains at Akron City Hospital following a crash Wednesday involving 5 seniors at Theodore Roosevelt High School
One student remains hospitalized today following a crash Wednesday that injured five seniors at Theodore Roosevelt High School. Tammy Prunty-Ayers said Friday that her son, Jake Prunty, was released from Robinson Memorial Hospital Thursday afternoon. "I was so glad he was able to come home so soon," Prunty-Ayers said. "Now we need (Zach) Marlow to pull through so the five can be together again." Marlow was the most seriously injured student involved in the crash, and he remains hospitalized at Akron City Hospital. The boys were riding in a Jeep Liberty during their lunch break Wednesday morning when the car rolled over at the intersection of Lake Street and Crain Avenue. Marlow was pinned beneath the car. Friends can send get-well cards to…

Five Kent Roosevelt seniors were injured, one critically, in the crash Wednesday
Two Theodore Roosevelt High School seniors remain hospitalized today after the SUV they were riding in rolled over at the intersection of Lake Street and Crain Avenue Wednesday morning. Zach Marlow, who became pinned beneath the vehicle, was listed as serious for his condition in the intensive care unit at Akron City Hospital Thursday. Jacob Prunty, who sustained a fractured vertebra in his back during the crash, was listed in stable condition at Robinson Memorial Hospital Thursday afternoon. Marlow's sister, Jennifer Cline, said her brother remains in critical condition and doctors are monitoring his intracranial pressure because of swelling of his brain after the crash. The good news, Cline said, is that doctors have not seen any …

I would love to see them catch and punish the occupants of the other car. Look for other teens who live in the neighborhood. Police probably don't have to look far.   more ›
