Wells Sherman House Relocation Slowed by Temporary Injunction

Court appeal by citizens group has hearing on permanent injunction request Tuesday

The court battle over the relocation of the historic Kent Wells Sherman House has so far slowed the project with a temporary restraining order. Portage County Common Pleas Court Judge John Enlow issued a temporary injunction on behalf of the Kent citizens' group titled "Save the Standing Rock Garden," comprised of supporters of the Standing Rock Cultural Arts, that temporarily stops site work at 247 N. Water St. for relocation of the historic house. Enlow issued the temporary order this month. The group originally filed an appeal to the September planning commission ruling that approved a site plan for the historic house at 247 N. Water St. Roger Thurman, vice president of the Kent Wells Sherman House Inc. board, which is working to …

as this progresses i find it harder and harder to believe that saving the house has anything to do with most people with "kswh" wanting to rip up the garden. a longstanding feud with the owner of the building and a distaste for the occupants of that building are the driving motivation for more than one of the folks. remember ned, that building as well as the bars were there when you bought that …   more ›

UPDATE: Former Hillel Site Unlikely Location for Wells-Sherman House

Kent State has no immediate plans to swap or sell North Lincoln property

Editor's note: this story was updated at 1:54p.m. The former site of the Hillel at Kent State University on North Lincoln Street may not be the premiere alternate site for the Kent Wells Sherman House some want it to be. Jeff Ingram, director of Standing Rock Cultural Arts, suggested this week the vacant lot at 202 N. Lincoln St. would be a better fit for the historic Kent house than the space at 247 N. Water St. — next door to SRCA. Ingram made the suggestion at Wednesday's Kent City Council meeting and suggested university officials might be willing to work with the city to use the land for the Kent Wells Sherman House. Tom Euclide, Kent State’s associate vice president for Facilities Planning and Operations, said Ingram may have …

Standing Rock Offers Alternate Site for Kent Wells Sherman House

Arts group pleads with city council to consider working with Kent State to use lot at 202 N. Lincoln St.

The director of Standing Rock Cultural Arts made one last push Wednesday to try and stop the relocation of a historic Kent house to greenspace adjacent to the arts group's gallery. Jeff Ingram, director of the SCRA, urged members of Kent City Council to stop the relocation of the Kent Wells-Sherman House to the lot at 247 N. Water St. Ingram asked council to consider an alternate site for the historic house, which already has the necessary approval from several city commissions to be moved to the space next to the North Water Street Gallery. He suggested the house be moved to the vacant lot at 202 N. Lincoln St., which is owned by Kent State University and was formerly home to Hillel at Kent State. "North Lincoln over North Water has many …

Maybe we can show President Obama the Wells Sherman House, so he can see that Kent values historic preservation. Just because one patch of land will be used for something new does not mean that Kent does not value arts education or green space or food producing gardens. It's just one patch of land. It's not a large food-producing community garden. There is plenty of green space in and around Kent…   more ›

Wells-Sherman House gets OK to Move to North Water Street

Planning commission approves site plan for house at 247 N. Water St.

After months of debate, members of the non-profit  Kent Wells Sherman House Inc. have the OK to move a historic house with ties to the city's namesake family to the lot at 247 N. Water St. The Kent Planning Commission voted 3-2 Tuesday to approve a site plan for the lot that situates the house 13.5 feet back from the sidewalk. The lot is the green space between the Standing Rock Cultural Arts gallery and the Scribbles Coffee Company building downtown. The issue has appeared before several of the city's citizen planning boards in recent months as members of the non-profit worked to save it from demolition. The house had to be moved recently to make way for Kent State University's Esplanade extension, which saw the demolition of several of …

Haymaker Parkway to Close Saturday for House Move

Wells-Sherman House will travel on flat-bed truck several hundred feet southwest on S.R. 59

Drivers will want to avoid Haymaker Parkway downtown Saturday morning, as the road will be closed for about two hours for the relocation of a two-story house. Kent Police Capt. Paul Canfield said police will close the five-lane roadway between South DePeyster and South Willow streets for the relocation of the Kent Wells-Sherman House. Canfield said the road will be closed between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. The house will be trucked several hundred feet southwest from its current location at the end of East Erie Street to a temporary spot at the western end of East College Avenue. Friends and family of Kent State University students attending summer commencement ceremonies Saturday, which start at 9:30 a.m., can use East Main and Summit streets to …

City gives Jimmy John's until August for $15,000 Relocation Grant

Deadline extended for sub shop to move into Kent Stage building

Jimmy John's has until the end of July to finish its move further into downtown Kent in order to get $15,000 in assistance from the city. Kent City Council voted recently to again push back the deadline for the sandwich shop to make its move from 313 E. Main St., the future site of Kent's new courthouse, into the Kent Stage building and former home of Spin-More Records. In March, council first voted to give the business $15,000 to aid in its move about a block west. The assistance came with an original relocation deadline of June 1. Then as the June 1 deadline approached officials with the city and county agreed to give the restaurant at least until July 1 to finish the move. But the restaurant still hasn't finished its move, so council …

TransPortage gets $15,000 Loan to Relocate Wells-Sherman House

Support, opposition voiced by crowd at Kent City Council meeting

One of several dominoes that needs to fall to save the historic Kent Wells-Sherman House did just that Wednesday night at Kent City Council. There are still a few more blocks to fall. Council voted Wednesday to finalize a vote taken earlier this month to loan $15,000 to the non-profit group TransPortage to relocate the house from 250 E. Erie St. to a plot of greenspace on North Water Street between Scribbles Coffee and Standing Rock Cultural Arts. Kent State University has also promised to lend $40,000 to the effort to relocate the house. The house stands in the path of Kent State's Esplanade extension and must be moved this summer so construction can start. Yet TransPortage still has to buy the land — a purchase agreement is in place — …

Zoning Board Delays Vote on Baker's Towing Relocation Across Lake Street

Residents who opposed relocation filled city hall to capacity Monday

The owner of Baker's Towing & Auto Repair and the residents opposed to his relocation will have to wait another month to learn if his business has a future in their Lake Street neighborhood. The Kent Board of Zoning Appeals opted to table their discussion and vote on a request from the company's owner, Aubrey Baker, for a substitution of a non-conforming use certificate to allow his business to relocate to a piece of property zoned R-3 for residential use at 634 Lake St. The zoning board chose to delay their vote until their July meeting after a four and-a-half hour session Monday night — and at the suggestion of Baker's attorney, Thomas Reitz. "Frankly, we’re all exhausted," Reitz said to the board. "We would request that you consider …

Standing Rock Director Opposes Wells-Sherman House Relocation

Jeff Ingram, director of Standing Rock Cultural Arts, wants greenspace next to art gallery preserved

It may be too late, but the director of Standing Rock Cultural Arts sent a letter to Kent City Council members this week expressing his opposition to the Wells-Sherman House relocation. The Friends of the Wells-Sherman House are planning to relocate the building to the patch of greenspace between SRCA and the Scribbles Coffee Company building on North Water Street. The space, however, has been used by SRCA for programming and events for years. Council voted last week to loan $15,000 to the relocation effort and will cast its final vote on the loan next week. Ingram's letter to council, sent Tuesday, is below: Greetings City Council, Though I claim no ownership to the property at 247 North Water St, I’d like to contribute my two cents and …

Letter: Towing Company Should Find Different Location

Send letters to the editor via email to Matt.Fredmonsky@patch.com

For several years, our family waited and saved to be able to live in this traditional middle class residential family neighborhood a block away from Walls Elementary School in Kent. The quiet, tree lined streets, single family homes and safe, short  walk to the elementary school has always attracted families with young children. Senior citizens who raised their children decades ago continue to live here because of the quality of our neighborhood. It's such a quiet neighborhood, that Walls schoolchildren serve as crossing guards before and after school with no adult supervision. Now this traditional family neighborhood is threatened by the proposal to change 40 years of residential zoning so that a towing, trucking, auto repair and storage …
