Kent State to Move Historic House Today

May Prentice House to be moved from its temporary spot on Willow Street to Esplanade

After more than a year in its temporary home the May Prentice House will be relocated today to its permanent resting place on the Esplanade. Kent State University is again moving the historic house, the former home of Kent State's first female faculty member. The house was moved in February 2012 so that construction on the Esplanade, the pedestrian trail linking the campus to downtown Kent, could proceed. The house had stood at 128 S. Willow St. — directly in the path of the new walkway. The house will serve as the new home of the Wick Poetry Center and will stand across the Esplanade from the new College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Wick Center to Join Architecture College on Esplanade

Poetry center to relocate to Esplanade walkway linking Kent State campus to downtown

Kent State University's Wick Poetry Center will relocate to a new poetry park and building to stand on the Esplanade that, when finished this year, will link campus to downtown Kent. David Hassler, director of the Wick Poetry Center, said they will relocate to the May Prentice House, which will stand off South Lincoln Street behind the Starbucks building and directly across the Esplanade from the new College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Hassler said the relocation project will incorporate an interactive poetry park, which will allow people to interact with interchangeable poetry posters via their smart phone or tablet device. He said the park creates both a physical greenspace to bridge the town and gown, but it also creates a…

Thanks for providing the website information re the poetry center. It's hard to believe that it was established almost thirty years ago. Time sure flies! Robert (I knew him as Bob), in addition of his wonderful artistic talents, could really throw a baseball. Back in the 1960's we walked over to the front lawn of Roosevelt (now Davey Elementary) and I tried to catch him. One pitch and I said "…   more ›

Wells Sherman House Gets Foundation Permit

Court hearing scheduled on permanent injunction request

Efforts to relocate the historic Kent Wells Sherman House may be nearing an end. The Kent Community Development Department recently issued a foundation permit that would allow the non-profit working to move the house, Kent Wells Sherman House, Inc., to build a foundation for the house on the lot owned by the group at 247 N. Water St. And Portage County Common Pleas Judge John Enlow recently set a hearing date in the court battle over the relocation for March 1 on the permanent injunction request made by the Save the Standing Rock Garden, a group of residents who oppose moving the house to the greenspace on North Water Street. The foundation permit issued Feb. 12 only addresses the foundation. Other building code requirements of the …

Judge Rules on Objections in Wells Sherman House Case

Request for oral hearing in case is denied

A Portage County judge has ruled that the court case over the relocation of a historic Kent house should not be reopened for further oral arguments. Portage County Common Pleas Judge John Enlow issued a ruling in the ongoing court case between two groups, the Kent Wells Sherman House, Inc., and Save the Standing Rock Garden, over the relocation of the Kent Wells Sherman House to the lot at 247 N. Water St. Enlow's ruling was issued in response to an objection to an earlier ruling in the case by Portage County Magistrate Kent Graham. The objection to Graham's ruling had been filed by Kent attorney John Plough on behalf of Save the Standing Rock Garden. Plough had argued in his objection, filed in December, that Graham had erred in his …

Visions for Vacancies: Dr. Greenbee's Acorn Alley Spot

Patch's Visions for Vacancies asks for reader input on empty commercial spaces

Change is coming to Acorn Alley following the temporary closure of retail shop Dr. Greenbee. The eco-friendly retailer announced plans in November to recipients of its email newsletter the store will relocate to a larger space in Kent with better accessibility and more parking. A specific space has yet to be announced publicly. "We will miss our friends in Acorn Alley but feel this is the best decision for our customers," the newsletter states. "We are looking at a few locations in Kent and plan to reopen May 15." In the meantime, that means their old spot off of Burbick Way (formerly Alley 4) could be available to the next Kent entrepreneur. We want to know what kind of business or use would be a good fit in the building and serve Kent's …

Wells Sherman House Court Case Not Over

Group files objection to magistrate's ruling

The struggle persists over the relocation of a historic Kent house to a cherished piece of greenspace. Kent attorney John Plough, representing members of the group Save the Standing Rock Garden, who oppose the relocation of the Kent Wells Sherman House to 247 N. Water St., has filed an objection to a magistrate's decision in the court case about the issue. In December Portage County Magistrate Kent Graham denied three injunction requests made by Save the Standing Rock Garden in an effort to stop the relocation of the house to the lot, which has been used — but not owned — for decades by members of neighboring Kent arts group Standing Rock Cultural Arts. Plough had asked the court for injunctions in November against the Kent Wells Sherman …

It would be much more appropriate and culturally sensitive to the vibrant close knit community here to just take a few photos of the KWSH and then dismantle it. Use the historic timbers to make fittings for Ray's (an actual historic landmark) or something useful, or take any actual historic artifacts from the house and put them on display at Kent State as a part of a permanent exhibit on Kent …   more ›

Deadline for Moving Kent Wells Sherman House Extended

Portage magistrate denies request for preliminary injunction to stop relocation of house to North Water Street lot

Today's deadline threatening demolition of the Kent Wells Sherman House if it was not moved from land owned by Kent State University appears flexible after all. News came Friday that a Portage County magistrate had denied a request from a group of Kent residents looking to stop the relocation of the historic house to a vacant lot at 247 N. Water St. The house, which had to be moved for construction of Kent State's Esplanade extension, was temporary relocated to a small parcel of university land at the western end of East College Avenue in August. Both university and city officials said the house had to be moved from that locale by today or it would be demolished so it did not interfere with city plow trucks that use that dead-end portion …

Court Ends Testimony on Wells Sherman House Injunction Request

Portage magistrate closes second, full day of trial

A court decision may be near in the case involving an appeal to stop the relocation of the historic Kent Wells Sherman House. Portage County Magistrate Kent Graham listened to a second, full day of witness testimony Wednesday before making several modifications to a temporary injunction order regarding the relocation of the house to 247 N. Water St. Kent Assistant Law Director Eric Fink said in a telephone interview after the court proceedings concluded Wednesday that Graham had ordered the final arguments and trial briefs be submitted to the court by Tuesday at 4 p.m. "There will be no further testimony taken," Fink said. Kent attorney John Plough, who is arguing the case on behalf of the Kent citizens' group "Save the Standing Rock …

David, you took the words right out of my mouth, thank you! This is about how government operates, not so much about who has the right to own and do what with their property. Its a case study in how a commission can be bullied into not doing its job, which is to hear the communities needs on property use, decide accordingly. They decided no, and shouldn't they; having heard testimony from most who…   more ›

No Ruling on Injunction for Wells Sherman House Relocation

Court considering permanent injunction request against relocation of historic house to North Water Street site

A Portage County magistrate has yet to rule on a request for a permanent injunction to stop the relocation of the historic Kent Wells Sherman House to a vacant lot at 247 N. Water St. Portage County Magistrate Kent Graham listened to testimony from several witnesses Tuesday as Kent attorney John Plough argued for the injunction on behalf of the Kent citizens' group "Save the Standing Rock Garden." Earlier this month, Portage County Common Pleas Court Judge John Enlow issued a temporary injunction on behalf of the group, which is comprised of supporters of the Standing Rock Cultural Arts, that temporarily stopped site work for relocation of the historic house. The group originally filed an appeal to a September Kent Planning Commission …
