Mother Banned From Davey Elementary Following Gun Threat

Rachel A. Gauntner, who allegedly threatened to bring a gun to Davey Elementary, appeared in Portage County Municipal Court Friday.

Rachel A. Gauntner appeared in Portage County Municipal Court on Friday after spending the last week in jail for allegedly threatening to bring a gun to Davey Elementary School.  During the preliminary hearing, Judge Barbara Watson prohibited Gauntner, 33, of Kent, from stepping on Davey's grounds and banned her from any contact with students, according to the Portage County Municipal Clerk of Courts Office.  The same restrictions apply to Children's Advantage Counseling and Mental Health Center in Ravenna, Watson ordered.  Gauntner was released on her own recognizance, and will remain out of jail, for the time being, so long as the court's conditions are met.  Gauntner is charged with aggravated menacing, a fifth-degree felony, and is set…

Anonymously, I apologize if you think I was coming at you. I was not. I will never know the situation until I talk to the young lady and listen to those around her. She has a problem and needs help. You take care.   more ›

New Courthouse Entrance Moved to Center of Building

Kent Planning Commission approves site plan for 30,000 square foot building

Altered plans for the new Kent courthouse — with the main entrance moved to the center, front of the building — were approved unanimously by the Kent Planning Commission Tuesday night. The big change in the plans moved the main entrance from the southeast corner of the building to the center of the building's southern face, which faces East Main Street. Architect Allan Renzi of Richard L. Bowen & Associates in Cleveland, the firm designing the building for Portage County, said the Portage County Commissioners agreed to move the main entrance at the recommendation of the Kent Architectural Review Board. "The site plan was revised … based on recommendations that came from (the architecture board)," Renzi said. The initial proposal to put the…

Well said, Logan! And the fraternity houses on Main Street look a whole lot better than a lot of owner occupied houses in Kent. The members of them must be proud of them. As an old townie I would be more than happy to see them stay where they are rather than disappear somewhere back on campus.. It is nice to drive by and see the youg people enjoying themselves in the front yards on nice days. …   more ›

Two Kentites Among Six Adults Arrested in Brimfield Meth-Lab Raid

The following arrest information was provided by the Portage County Sheriff's Office. It does not indicate conviction.

Two Kent residents were among six adults arrested Friday when the Portage County Drug Task Force busted an operational meth lab at a Brimfield home. Charges are pending against one of the five juveniles present at the house during the raid. The raid was the result of a month-long investigation into the illegal manufacturing of methamphetamine at the 4396 Edson Road house, Portage County Sheriff David Doak stated Monday in a press release. Doak said task force members prepared a search warrant to look for evidence of items used in the manufacturing of meth. The warrant was executed Friday night by members of the task force, with assistance from the Brimfield Police Department. Several meth-lab components were seized, Doak said, along with a…
