Crain, Water Intersection Striping Set

New intersection to get lanes painted on Friday

The Ohio Department of Transportation is planning to place pavement striping along the intersection of North Water Street, Crain Avenue and Lake Street Friday Friday morning. The work is expected to take about four hours. Traffic will be maintained with cones, but delays can be expected. The striping will be postponed until next week if it rains Friday.

Thank you! It's about time! I hope it doesn't rain. That intersection is an accident waiting to happen. And when will they clarify that those turning left out of Crain Ave. don't have to stop at the confusing stop light leading to the bridge? It is odd and I see plenty of people start going from Crain only to look up right out of the intersection and see and red light and stop.   more ›

New Wells-Sherman House Plan gets OK from Architecture Board

Friends of Kent Wells-Sherman House presented altered site plan for 247 N. Water St. lot

The historic Kent Wells-Sherman House is one step closer to relocating to 247 N. Water St., the site preferred by the non-profit group working to restore the house. The Kent Architectural Review Board issued a certificate of appropriateness to the Friends of the Kent Wells-Sherman House, Inc., for a site plan that puts the house on the vacant lot between Scribbles Coffee Company and Standing Rock Cultural Arts North Water Street Gallery. The project's site plan will next go to the Kent Planning Commission for consideration on Sept. 4. But there's a catch. The architecture board recommended the house be set back between 12 feet and 15 feet from North Water Street. And the planning commission already voted this summer to reject a site plan …

I've attempted to explain the fundamental reality of these laws. I haven't advocated for or against landowners' rights. In short, everything that has occurred has been legal -- people without current or prospective ownership interest in 247 N. Water St. expressed their concerns to the Planning Board, and the board voted against approving the plans to locate the house onto 247 N. Water St. Like it…   more ›

Mill Moves Trucks Off Water Street Downtown

North Water Street traffic flow no longer interrupted by delivery trucks at Star of the West Milling of Ohio

Work is just about finished on the Star of the West Milling of Ohio's realignment of its loading dock on North Water Street. The mill started work this spring to change the angle of the dock so trucks making deliveries would no longer disrupt traffic on the busy downtown street. Prior to the change, the truck drivers were forced to park their trucks partially on the street at an angle that blocked the entire southbound lane.

Seems like a win-win all around based on feedback on the several articles we've run. Kudos to the mill for making the change.   more ›

Parking Closed on North Water While Mill Changes Dock

Four spaces are closed while construction ensues on mill loading dock

Four parking spaces on North Water Street are closed for an indeterminate amount of time while construction ensues at Star of the West Milling of Ohio. The spaces are on the east side of North Water Street near 227 N. Water St. Across the street, Star of the West is changing the angle of its loading dock, which faces east and forces parked, full-sized truck trailers to occupy one lane of North Water Street while loading and unloading. As a result, cars headed south on Water Street occassionally have to make a blind turn into oncoming traffic to get around the trucks. After the dock work is finished trucks should no longer occupy a portion of the street. Red Michel, manager of Star of the West, said previously the mill is hopeful to finish …
