Demolition Outpaces New Construction

Demolition has outpaced new construction in Kent the past two years, but that is likely to change as downtown redevelopment projects start breaking ground in 2011. As of Dec. 1, 13 commercial and six residential buildings had been razed. In comparison, just four houses and three commercial buildings were built this year. The pattern for 2010 was in line with 2009, when more buildings came down than went up. Twenty-three buildings were demolished in that year, compared with 11 built. The numbers exclude work on the campus of Kent State University, which accounted for three off-campus razings and two on-campus demolitions this year.
