Kent State Names 8 Semi-Finalists in Architecture College Design Competition

Semi-finalists include firm designing new Kent courthouse

The eight semi-finalists in the design competition for Kent State University's new architecture college have been announced. The firms are: From these eight firms the university will select four finalists, who will be paid a stipend to design a model of their proposed building design for the new architecture college facility. The four finalists will be chosen in November. The actual design competition for the new $40 million building will start in January 2013.

Kent Police Invite Residents to Tour Station

7 tours planned ahead of November vote on safety levy

Voters in Kent who will decide the fate of a 0.25 percent income tax increase to build a new police station will get a chance to tour the existing building before the General Election. Kent Police Chief Michelle Lee and Capt. Jayme Cole will lead tours of the station that will take about one hour and offer a rare view behind the scenes of the department. According to the department's website, the tour dates and times are: To register take a tour, call the station at 330-673-7732. If approved, the measure would raise Kent's income tax rate from 2 percent to 2.25 percent. I'm afraid to tour it. I don't have the right gear. I would need a hard hat for the falling in ceiling. I would need waterproof boots for the flooding. Goodness knows what I would need to protect me from the rats and pests. What would I need for the not up-to-date plumbing and electrical? A port-a -potty and a flashlight? New Kent State Architecture Building to Stand on Esplanade

$40 million building part of $170 million campus renovation

Douglas Steidl was all smiles Wednesday morning. After months of internal talks, the dean of the Kent State University College of Architecture and Environmental Design finally got to speak publicly about plans for a new, $40 million architecture building as part of $170 million in renovations to the Kent campus. Steidl said a new architecture building has been talked about among university administrators for months as part of the campus renovation, but it wasn't until about six months ago the decision to build it became final. "It’s been an off-and-on and off-and-on process," Steidl said. “We’ve been excited ever since, and yet (it was) sort of an inside story as opposed to an outside story.
