City Council Says Cajun Dave’s Can Keep On Smokin’

Conditional use permit for restaurant's on-street smoker will be extended for a full year.

It’s Friday, which means Cajun Dave’s will be serving up its BBQ Platter Special tonight featuring meats slow-cooked in its mega-smoker – a weekly event the restaurant is allowed to continue on Water Street for another year, says Kent City Council. Last May council voted to extend a conditional use permit allowing the restaurant, which is located inside the Water Street Tavern, to operate a barbecue smoker in an on-street parking space in front of the building twice weekly. The smoker is typically only used on Fridays. Council’s approval in May came after several neighboring business owners wrote letters speaking out against the smoker, which is why the extension came with the condition that council review the operation this month. Here's an idea - eliminate street parking on that side of water St. and expand the sidewalk so there would be room for a smoker and sidewalk dining for other restaurants. This town really needs some outdoor dining and sidewalk cafes. And before you all jump on me, yes I know Laziza has that outdoor area and yes, I understand safety issues would need to be addressed accordingly.   more ›

Tree City Coffee & Pastry Opens Bright and Early Monday

The owners of Kent’s newest Acorn Alley II business – Tree City Coffee & Pastry – are excited to see city residents gathering alongside Kent State University residents in an environment designed to make everyone feel like part of one community. Co-owners Mike Beder, Evan Bailey and Brian Bower are excited to finally open the doors at 5:30 a.m. Monday to start serving up their eight different coffees, made-fresh-daily muffins and pastries and a unique selection of sandwiches made on fresh-baked breads. Tree City Coffee collaborated with Bent Tree Coffee Roasters in Kent to create the Two Trees blend. Came in here to complain about another coffee shop opening in a town where that's about the only thing that exists instead of much needed quality food but I saw Jerry's Diner and muffin, so good work...   more ›
