MAC Trailer to Open Kent Location

Alliance truck trailer manufacturer signed a deal to open in the former Fontaine Trailer plant on Fairchild Avenue

It took a few months, but Alliance truck trailer builder MAC Trailer has signed a deal to open a plant in Kent. Work started over the weekend to move into the long-vacant former Fontaine Trailer plant at 1440 Fairchild Ave. In a June interview, Jim Maiorana, executive vice president for MAC, said they had been considering moving into Kent for about four weeks. City officials, who broke the news of the possible expansion in Kent earlier this summer, are optimistic the operation will bring as many as 163 jobs — and a $6 million payroll — to Kent by MAC's second year in business here. Frat House Parking Changes Approved by Planning Commission

Four East Main Street fraternity houses will have new parking lots to accommodate the PARTA transit center

Changes are coming to the parking lots of four fraternity houses on East Main Street to make room for the new Kent Central Gateway transit center. At Tuesday night's Kent Planning Commission meeting, Bryan Smith, director of planning for the Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority, gave a rundown of the changes to the houses at 224, 230, 300 and 312 E. Main Street. Planning commission members Peter Paino and Melissa Long were absent, but all changes were unanimously approved. Each property's parking lot has to be reconfigured to fit the facility, and the work will be done at PARTA's expense, Smith said. Smith and TranSystems designer David Watkins, a consultant on the project, worked with property owners to make sure the houses …

Dominick's New Facade Goes Back to Its Roots

The Franklin Avenue tavern gets a new look

Yet another Franklin Avenue building is paying homage to its roots through a facade renovation that’s stopping passers-by in their tracks . Dominick Mandalari Jr., who owns Dominick’s tavern with siblings Bruno and Nancy Mandalari, said Tuesday he is excited about the renovation and the public feedback it's generating. “A lot of people are coming in off the street just to say how nice it looks – and some are even staying to have a drink,” Mandalari said with a laugh. “I think the renovation is fabulous.” The work, which started in mid-March, is close to being complete. Colors for the street-level exterior will be chosen within the next few days. Carriage lights and new signage will be installed in the coming weeks. For project designer …
