Wells-Sherman House gets OK to Move to North Water Street

Planning commission approves site plan for house at 247 N. Water St.

After months of debate, members of the non-profit  Kent Wells Sherman House Inc. have the OK to move a historic house with ties to the city's namesake family to the lot at 247 N. Water St. The Kent Planning Commission voted 3-2 Tuesday to approve a site plan for the lot that situates the house 13.5 feet back from the sidewalk. The lot is the green space between the Standing Rock Cultural Arts gallery and the Scribbles Coffee Company building downtown. The issue has appeared before several of the city's citizen planning boards in recent months as members of the non-profit worked to save it from demolition. The house had to be moved recently to make way for Kent State University's Esplanade extension, which saw the demolition of several of …

Hope so too, Sue, but offering to purchase property is not what people who claim squatter's rights do.   more ›

New Wells-Sherman House Plan gets OK from Architecture Board

Friends of Kent Wells-Sherman House presented altered site plan for 247 N. Water St. lot

The historic Kent Wells-Sherman House is one step closer to relocating to 247 N. Water St., the site preferred by the non-profit group working to restore the house. The Kent Architectural Review Board issued a certificate of appropriateness to the Friends of the Kent Wells-Sherman House, Inc., for a site plan that puts the house on the vacant lot between Scribbles Coffee Company and Standing Rock Cultural Arts North Water Street Gallery. The project's site plan will next go to the Kent Planning Commission for consideration on Sept. 4. But there's a catch. The architecture board recommended the house be set back between 12 feet and 15 feet from North Water Street. And the planning commission already voted this summer to reject a site plan …

I've attempted to explain the fundamental reality of these laws. I haven't advocated for or against landowners' rights. In short, everything that has occurred has been legal -- people without current or prospective ownership interest in 247 N. Water St. expressed their concerns to the Planning Board, and the board voted against approving the plans to locate the house onto 247 N. Water St. Like it…   more ›

City, Kent State to Relocate Wells-Sherman House Temporarily

Friends of Kent Wells Sherman House will have until Dec. 1 to save historic house from demolition

The historic Kent Wells-Sherman House will be moved temporarily from its location at 250 E. Erie St. to the western end of East College Avenue thanks to a partnership between the city and Kent State University. Members of Kent City Council authorized city staff Wednesday to move forward on an agreement with the university to temporarily move the house to save it from immediate demolition. The agreement would give the supporters of the house's restoration, the Friends of the Kent Wells Sherman House, until Dec. 1 to find a permanent location for the house. Otherwise, it will be torn down if a permanent location can't be found before Dec. 1, Kent City Manager Dave Ruller said. "Everybody acknowledges that the house would be taken down at …

Council Gives $15,000 to Wells-Sherman House Effort

Friends of Kent Wells-Sherman House plan to relocate it to North Water Street

The Kent residents working to relocate the historic Kent Wells-Sherman House and save it from demolition cleared one of many obstacles to the effort Wednesday. Kent City Council voted to spend $15,000 of city money to help relocate the house to a piece of land on North Water Street the Friends of the Kent Wells-Sherman House have identified as the best viable option for the structure. The vote, in committee, came after a 90 minute discussion about the proposal and whether the city has the time and resources to help with the effort. Council voted 6-2 in favor of loaning $15,000 to the group, which indicated it would only accept the money if it can raise another $15,000 to match the effort. Rick Hawksley, a Kent architect coordinating the …

Plan to Save Wells-Sherman House Pitched to Planning Commission

Request for site plan approval set for June 19 meeting

The architect helping to organize the proposed relocation of the historic Kent Wells-Sherman House pitched the proposal to the Kent Planning Commission Tuesday. Rick Hawksley showed site plans for the property on North Water Street, between Scribbles Coffee and Standing Rock Cultural Arts, where the Friends of the Kent Wells-Sherman House and TransPortage want to move the house to. The pre Civil War greek revival, standing at 250 E. Erie St., is in the path of Kent State University's Esplanade extension and must be moved this summer for construction. Hawksley said he made the courtesy presentation Tuesday to find out if the commission had any serious reservations about the project or the proposed site plan. Commission member John Gargan …

I see two really bad things in the list of possible sites. First, our public servants, the administrators at KSU, our taxpayer-supported university, wants that historic house gone. Those same public servants said they don't want the house included in the project . Now the last time I checked, university administrators are on our payroll working for us at our directive. So this is what the Mayor …   more ›
