C.J. Steward has been fired from his job, charged and indefinitely suspended from the Golden Flashes for allegedly assaulting a woman.
A Kent State football player has been suspended indefinitely from the team for allegedly grabbing a co-worker by the arm, pushing her into a door and damaging her TV, kentwired.com reports. Senior linebacker C.J. Steward was arrested Feb. 15 and has been charged with misdemeanor assault and property damage. The brief scuffle reportedly occurred at The Province apartments -- located at 609 S. Lincoln St. -- and Steward has been fired for his alleged connection to the incident. Freshman Julian Durden's athletic successes may be negated by his off-the-field legal troubles.
A Kent State freshman running back has been indefinitely suspended from the Golden Flashes after being charged with felony theft and misdemeanor drug possession. Julian Durden, 18, of McKees Rock, Pa., was charged with one felony count of receiving stolen property on Feb. 13 after he allegedly stole a woman’s debit card from her Korb Hall dorm room, reports the Akron Beacon Journal. Durden will appear in Portage County Municipal Court on Feb. 22 for a preliminary hearing. Additionally, Durden was found guilty of drug possession on Feb. 11 after Kent State University police caught him with a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the Korb Hall parking lot, according to online court records. After a trip to the College World Series, the Golden Flashes baseball team beat out the football team for the honor at the 2012 Greater Cleveland Sports Awards.
After such an amazing season that ended in the College World Series, it is no surprise that the Kent State baseball team is still gaining recognition. The Golden Flashes won the Collegiate Athlete of the Year Award Thursday night at the 2012 Greater Cleveland Sports Awards. The baseball team beat out both the Akron Zips soccer team and Kent State's football team. Coach Scott Stricklin received the award along with four of his players, including David Lyon, Jimmy Rider, David Starn and Nick Hamilton. All four were drafted by Major League Baseball teams. The Flashes dominated the Mid American Conference last season winning both the regular season and MAC Tournament Championships. The team blew through the Gary Regionals and then won the …

The Kent State Golden Flashes football team will play in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. on ESPN.
For years they suited up for the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders, and now, two players will be on the Kent State sideline in the football team's first bowl game in 40 years. Evan Shimensky and Marcus Wright are on the Kent State roster this year. Shimenksy, a redshirt freshman, was moved to the wide receiver spot after playing quarterback for Kent Roosevelt. In two seasons at Kent State he has yet to play in a game. Wright is in his first season for the Golden Flashes after tranferring from the University of Findlay. He hasn't seen any playing time this year but the junior totaled 195 career tackles in three seasons at Roosevelt with four interceptions, four forced fumbles and a touchdown. The team will face Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl Jan. 6 after tearing it up in the Mid American Conference by winning the MAC East title and earning a spot in the 2012 MAC Championship Game. Kent State may have lost the MAC title game, but the GoDaddy.com Bowl marks the team's first bowl game in 40 years. The winning season has drawn tighter the ties that bind town-gown relations in Kent and helped elevate Kent State on the national sports stage, but sadly it also meant the departure of head coach Darrell Hazell. The Kent State kick returner was named to ESPN.com's 2012 All-America team.
Dri Archer continues to get national recognition. One of Kent State football's top players was recently named to the ESPN.com 2012 All-America team as an all-purpose player. "Arguably no FBS player reflects his team's nickname better than Archer, who with the ball in his hands, usually is gone in a flash for the Golden Flashes," writes ESPN's Adam Rittenburg. Archer, a junior, had 15 kick returns this season for 573 yards and three touchdowns including a 98-yard return against Towson, a 99-yard return against Ball State and another 98-yard return at Eastern Michigan. The search is underway to find Darrell Hazell's replacement as the head coach of the Kent State football team. Athletic Director Joel Nielson has already begun the search and wants to have the spot filled over the next two to three weeks, according to Aaron Chimenti, spokesman for the football team.
