The Kent State Golden Flashes football team will play in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. on ESPN.
For years they suited up for the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders, and now, two players will be on the Kent State sideline in the football team's first bowl game in 40 years. Evan Shimensky and Marcus Wright are on the Kent State roster this year. Shimenksy, a redshirt freshman, was moved to the wide receiver spot after playing quarterback for Kent Roosevelt. In two seasons at Kent State he has yet to play in a game. Wright is in his first season for the Golden Flashes after tranferring from the University of Findlay. He hasn't seen any playing time this year but the junior totaled 195 career tackles in three seasons at Roosevelt with four interceptions, four forced fumbles and a touchdown. The Greenmen beat the Rough Riders 27-13.
The Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders were tied 13-13 with the Aurora Greenmen after the first half of the second-round Division II high school football playoff game Friday night. But Kent couldn't respond to two more Aurora touchdowns in the second half, and the Rough Riders lost to the Greenmen 27-13 to bring a heartbreaking end to an almost perfect season. Both teams had maintained a 10-1 record going into Friday's game. Kent beat Ellett 24-7 last week in the first round of the playoffs, while Aurora beat New Philadelphia 25-32. Friday's score means Aurora will next play Chardon — who also advanced in the playoffs Friday, beating Kenton 34-15. The game Nov. 17 will determine the regional championship.

The Stow Bulldogs beat the Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders in the second game of the 2012 football season 33-26 Friday night. Stow completed five touchdowns to Kent's four, beating their cross-town rival. Read more about the game here.

Boosters hope to raise $3,000 with Aug. 18 event at Oak Knolls
On Tuesday, we told you about how the Kent Roosevelt Football Boosters are in need of sponsors for this season to keep doing all the great things they do for the team. If you or your business can't become a sponsor, there's another way you can help — provided you like golf. The 1st Annual Roosevelt Football Golf Scramble is set for Saturday at Oak Knolls Golf Club. Organizers hope to raise $3,000 to support the team via the golf scramble. An open practice will precede the noon shotgun start so golf scramble participants can meet the 2012 football team. You can enter as an individual, a foursome or to sponsor a hole. More information is available on the registration form, which is attached to this article as a .pdf and can be downloaded.

Kent Roosevelt, with a halftime score of 7-9, appeared to be trading goals back and forth with the Cleveland Heights Tigers in the second round of the Division 1 women's lacrosse playoffs in Cleveland Monday night. But that was only the first half. In the second half, the Tigers went on to score nine more goals, while the Rough Riders scored three, making the final score 10-18. "I think we played the best we could," said Head Coach Christy Mitchell, who was marking the end of her 12th women's lacrosse season at Kent. "We brought everything we had. Playoffs start Friday at home for Kent Roosevelt boys lacrosse
The Kent Roosevelt boys lacrosse team prepares to go deep in the Division 2 playoffs with a senior laden squad that finished the regular season with an 11-3 record. Roosevelt is the No. 2 seed in the Central Region. Playoffs begin this Friday night at home at 7:30 p.m. versus the winner of the play-in game of Archbishop Hoban and Columbus Academy. If the rough riders win, they will also host another home game on Wednesday, May 23, in the second round. The Rough Riders gained a great deal of respect from other coaches as eight players received post-season accolades. Leading the way for Kent is senior Captain Midfielder Troy Haren who earned 1st Team All Region honors with 43 goals and 26 Assists. Troy has more goals and more assists than …

Kent quarterback will play in January 2013 high school football bowl game
Junior Kent Roosevelt quarterback Tra Chapman is headed to the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Chapman was among eight other area star football players headed to the game on Jan. 5, 2013, in the annual east versus west match. The 6 foot 2, 200 pound junior helped lead Kent to several victories in the 2011 season. Throughout his high school career, Chapman has averaged 236 passing yards per game, earned a total 2,835 passing yards, scored 29 touchdowns and has a quarterback rating of 137, according to MaxPreps.com.
