Annual race hosted by Kent Parks & Recreation biggest ever
David Mars, 30, of Kent, won the overall during the 2012 Kent Parks and Recreation Tree City Turkey Trot with a time of 16 minutes 28 seconds. Kent Parks and Recreation Director John Idone said this year was the biggest ever with more than 440 racers in the 5K and 40 children in the fun run. The race was held Thanksgiving morning on the new leg of The Portage Hike and Bike Trail that runs along the Cuyahoga River between John Brown Tannery Park and Fred Fuller Park.

Arson suspected in weekend fire that caused estimated $4,000 in damage
A fire damaged the storage shed at the closed Kramer Ball Fields on Stow Street recently. Kent Parks and Recreation Director John Idone said the suspected arson caused an esimated $4,000 in damage to the building. "We've been having some vandalism problems down at Kramer Fields here in the last month," Idone said. "We had removed all the equipment from that building." In the past month, vandals threw a bicycle rack onto the storage shed's roof, flipped over a set of bleachers, broke into the concessions building and set some leaves on fire. Idone said they suspect the fire that damaged the shed is arson because the building caught fire in the middle of the night with no accelerants or flammables inside. I am just amazed that the bridge was not made a priority over canoe river entry upgrades. The Kramer closure impacts many more than making it easier to put your canoe in the water.   more ›
