Across the nation, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. Police levy back on ballot Kent City Council voted this week to put a 0.25 percent income tax increase on the November ballot to pay for a new police station. The same tax increase failed in November 2012. Parking deck opens Kent residents and business owners have a new past-time — taking in the panoramic views of downtown Kent from atop the new PARTA Kent Central Gateway transit center, which opened to the public this week. Liquor permits reviewed This week Kent officials put a cap on the number of liquor license trex transfers that will be allowed into the city. May 4 The Kent State University community gathered this weekend to commemorate the May 4, 1970 shootings that killed four and wounded nine.

Kent Earns 'Town-Gown' Award

International Town-Gown Association bestows inaugural honor on city, university

Kent State University and the city of Kent have been selected as the winners of the Larry Abernathy Award from the International Town-Gown Association (ITGA). The award honors the town-gown relationship that best represents the spirit of ITGA.  The award was announced at the spring Bowman Breakfast, Kent's semi-annual meeting and celebration of town-gown relations. “This presentation best exemplified a town and university working together cohesively and promoting partnership and resources between all entities including the town, university, leaders, students, faculty and staff, neighborhood residents and businesses,” said Beth Bagwell, ITGA program director. St. Pet's Day Pet Walk Rescheduled

Event set for April 13 at Fred Fuller Park

The Celtic Club's St. Pet's Day Pet Parade in downtown Kent — postponed due to weather on March 16 — has been rescheduled. It will now be called the St. Pet's Day Crooked River Pet Walk and will take place at Fred Fuller Park in Kent at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 13. Participants and their pets will walk along the Cuyahoga River pathway from Fred Fuller Park to Tannery Park and back. St. Pet's Day is in memory of WNIR radio host Tom Erickson, a strong pet advocate. The Celtic Club is inviting pet lovers and their pets to come to Fred Fuller Park in Kent and to please bring donations of dog andcat food and cat litter for humane andpet rescue groups. Kentite on Portage Most Wanted Fugitive List

All information is according to the Portage County Sheriff's Office and county court records

The Portage County Sheriff's Office needs your help in finding a Kent man who is on the latest 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list. The sheriff's office has identified Jose L. Montanez, II, 30, last known address of Kent, as being one of the county's 10 most wanted fugitives. Montanez is wanted on warrants related to a burglary charge. The sheriff's office advises that people with information on fugitives should not try to apprehend them. Three properties with a Kent address are going to a sheriff's sale on Monday, according to the Portage County Sheriff's Office. Take a look at the list and see if any of them are in your neighborhood — or in your price range if you're looking for a new home in the Kent area.
