Mayor performs fewer ceremonies than in past
Kent Mayor Jerry Fiala is marrying fewer couples these days. As mayor of Kent, Fiala can legally perform wedding ceremonies to marry area residents. But fewer people are going to Kent city hall to get hitched. Fiala said he's performed seven weddings so far this year — down from 14 in 2011. "In one year I think my record was 36," Fiala, who previously served as mayor in 1997, said. "But at that time I traveled all over Portage County." The Kent mayor's office has seen some big-name weddings. In 2002, former mayor John Fender presided over the wedding of Cleveland Browns star Josh Cribbs. But the phone just isn't ringing anymore. Kent or Stow's mayor will give a $50 donation to a local charity, depending on who wins the game ... and the bet Aug. 31, 2012.
In honor of the upcoming Stow vs. Kent football game at Stow-Munroe Falls High School on Aug. 31, Kent Mayor Jerry Fiala and Stow Mayor Sara Drew have a friendly challenge on the outcome of the game. Should Kent win, Drew said she will be making a $50 donation to the Portage Learning Center. If Stow wins, Fiala has agreed to donate $50 to the Stow Excellence in Education Foundation (SEEF). Addtionally, the two Chamber of Commerce directors got in the action and have a side bet of $25 to the other Chamber's scholarship fund. Click here for Stow's full football schedule.

Cake, sparklers for Mayor Jerry Fiala
For the first time in this reporter's career members of Kent City Council sang happy birthday and served cake to celebrate the birthday of a sitting mayor. Kent Mayor Jerry Fiala blew out the candles on a surprise chocolate birthday cake Wednesday prior to the start of council's meeting. Fiala said he'd been bombarded with well-wishes throughout the day Wednesday. "This is the longest birthday ever," he said.
