Kent Environmental Council (KEC) supports the passage of Issue 11 on Nov. 6, and urges Kent citizens to do the same. Issue 11 asks voters to make an investment in their safety services by approving a 0.25 percent income tax levy that would generate about $1.3 million annually. This revenue will go to capital improvements only, not operating expenses or maintenance. Built in 1924, the 88-year-old building has had several additions and repairs made as the need for city services grew. KEC members who toured the building on Sept. 29 saw where a section of roof had collapsed in 2010, leading to an expensive repair. They also saw an aging building that is not compliant with many state-mandated standards and the federal Americans with …

The Kent Parks and Recreation Department hosted a Cuyahoga River Day Saturday at Plum Creek Park
Volunteers, sponsors and parents all hope a day of fun and learning about the Cuyahoga River will foster better care of it in the future. The Kent Parks and Recreation Department on Saturday hosted the 22nd annual Cuyahoga River Day at Plum Creek Park. The three-hour event attracted dozens of young visitors who helped celebrate the restoration of Plum Creek — when they weren't petting frogs from the creek, building grass mats or practicing life jacket safety. "Rivers are the arteries and veins of the Earth," Bonnie Tomassetti of the Native American & Veterans Center said during a group discussion. "You can go longer without food than you can water. We've got to keep the river clean." River Day was one of 19 similar events across Northeast …

About two dozen students, teachers, parents and community members built more garden space Saturday to enhance learning.
Students from Holden Elementary School can get salsa and responsibility skills from the same source — the ground. It's been like that for about three years, and with the help of about two dozen volunteers the opportunities for cauliflower, onions and botany lessons have expanded. A group of students, parents, teachers and others from the community gathered Saturday morning for a Garden Building Day to expand the Holden Garden enough so that each grade has a space of their own. The group isn't an actual garden club, but it consists of parents and administrators who want to keep building on what they believe is a creative and healthy method of learning. "I think it brings them closer to know where food is coming from instead of just thinking…

Panel of scientists, ecologists discussed potential environmental effects of horizontal hydraulic fracturing
More than 70 people from communities throughout Portage County attended a public forum Saturday at the Kent Stage on the topic of horizontal hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," hosted by the Kent Environmental Council. Moderated by Robert Heath, an ecosystem ecologist and retired director of the Water Resources Research Institute at Kent State University, “What the Frack?” included a panel of four scientists and environmental activists who took questions from the audience after presenting information on the fracking process. Fracking is a drilling method used to obtain natural gas trapped in underground shale. A drilling fluid composed of water and sand, with some chemical additives, is injected at high pressure into the rock to break it …
