3 Apply for Council Vacancy

Robin Turner's seat will be filled via appointment this month

So far just three Kent residents have applied for the seat on Kent City Council vacated earlier this month when Robin Turner handed in his resignation. And all three names should look familiar to Kent residents. The three who have applied so far are former Kent health commissioner John Ferlito, Kent Planning Commission member Melissa Long and longtime community activist Doria Daniels. Daniels founded the Thomas Anderson Development Corporation with other residents of Kent's South End neighborhood more than 20 years ago to address deterioration of the neighborhood and to foster home rehabilitation and ownership. Kent Hires New Health Commissioner

Jeffrey Niestadt replaces John Ferlito, who retired at the end of last week

The city of Kent officially hired its new health commissioner today after extending an offer and starting negotiations almost two weeks ago. Jeffrey Niestadt, director of education and training for the National Association of Local Boards of Health, accepted the city's offer and takes over as health commissioner Sept. 12. Niestadt takes the helm from retiring health commissioner John Ferlito, who spent 38 years managing health-related issues for Kent. Chris Woolverton, president of the Kent Health Board, said Niestadt has strong credentials and an impressive record of publications and presentations. Health Commissioner Search Continues

Kent Health Commissioner John Ferlito's last day is July 31

The city of Kent may not have a new health commissioner in place in time for the current commissioner's retirement at the end of the month. Kent Health Commissioner John Ferlito's last day is July 31, but the Kent Health Board may not have his replacement lined up in time for Monday, Aug 1. Ferlito said he's reviewing departmental procedures with his staff in anticipation of finding a new commissioner. If a timely replacement isn't found, the city's deputy health commissioner will take over in the interim. "(We're) putting together a checklist for the new person, whoever comes in," Ferlito said.
