County Ready to Demolish Old Jimmy John's

City issues demolition permit; site prep work already under way

Portage County officials are ready to demolish the old Jimmy John's location on East Main Street for construction of the new Kent courthouse. The Kent Community Development Department issued the demolition permit for the former restaurant at 313 E. Main St. this week. Jimmy John's relocated to the Kent Stage building earlier this summer. Meanwhile, city building officials are reviewing plans for the new courthouse, which already has site plan approval from the Kent Planning Commission and design approval from the Kent Architectural Review Board. I still think they could have torn down the buildings at the corner of Depyster and Summit, and built the new court house there, but, you know what they say, you can't fight city hall.   more ›

Kent Courthouse Project Easing Through Approval Process

Board of Zoning Appeals grants parking and setback variances for East Main Street site.

Portage County Commissioners were granted four variances Monday by the Kent Board of Zoning Appeals related to construction of a new Kent Municipal Courthouse building at 303 E. Main St., next to the Kent Historical Society. The East Main Street parcel – previously home to a motel and currently a Jimmy John's sandwich shop that’s moving – will eventually house a two-story, 25,000-square-foot courthouse to replace the present court building on South Water Street. The variances approved Monday will: Allan Renzi of Richard L. Bowen & Associates in Cleveland told zoning board members Monday the courthouse structure can’t be moved further back on the “very tight” two-acre site due to the need for a swale in the parking lot to meet rainwater …

City gives Jimmy John's until August for $15,000 Relocation Grant

Deadline extended for sub shop to move into Kent Stage building

Jimmy John's has until the end of July to finish its move further into downtown Kent in order to get $15,000 in assistance from the city. Kent City Council voted recently to again push back the deadline for the sandwich shop to make its move from 313 E. Main St., the future site of Kent's new courthouse, into the Kent Stage building and former home of Spin-More Records. In March, council first voted to give the business $15,000 to aid in its move about a block west. The assistance came with an original relocation deadline of June 1. Then as the June 1 deadline approached officials with the city and county agreed to give the restaurant at least until July 1 to finish the move. But the restaurant still hasn't finished its move, so council …

UPDATE: Jimmy John's gets 1 Month Extension for Move

Restaurant was supposed to vacate for new courthouse by June 1

Editor's note: this story was updated at 8 a.m. and 8:50 a.m. June 5. They were supposed to be out Friday, but Jimmy John's has a one-month extension to move out of the way of Kent's new courthouse. A court settlement reached in December between the owner of Kent's "freaky-fast" sandwich shop and its landlord dictated the restaurant had until June 1 to make its move into the Kent Stage building. But the owners of the SMJJ II franchise and the property owner, Schweigert Properties Inc. of Akron, agreed last week that the eatery can stay at 303 E. Main St. for at least another month until the new location a block away is finished. Schweigert Properties agreed to give Jimmy John's until June 30 to make the move, according to a filing in the …

Spin-More Moves on so Jimmy John's can Move In

Record store closes after 30 years in downtown Kent to make way for sandwich shop

Phil Peachock has no hard feelings against his friend and former landlord. Still, having to move his record shop after 30 years in downtown Kent was not an easy task for him, his friends or family on Tuesday. "It's hard," Peachock said. "Thirty years ..." Peachock closed the doors at Spin-More Records for the final time Tuesday in the Kent Stage building. Peachock's friend and owner of the Kent Stage, Tom Simpson, told Peachock about a month ago he planned to lease the space to popular Kent sandwich shop Jimmy John's starting this spring. "He's a business man," Peachock said. "He's got someone else who wants to come in and pay more rent. That's fine with me. Business is business." The sub shop had to find a new place to make its "freaky-…

Kent Will Buy Jimmy John's Site for $1 Million, Give to County for Courthouse

Kent City Council approved the land buy Wednesday after an executive session meeting

Popular sub shop Jimmy John's will move to make way for the new Kent branch of the Portage County Municipal Court. And a large chunk of the cost will come at Kent taxpayers' expense. Kent City Council voted Wednesday to spend $1,070,000 to buy a little more than 2 acres at 313 E. Main St. Once the city has ownership, it plans to swap that land with the county for the existing courthouse on South Water Street and an adjacent parking lot at the corner of Franklin Avenue and College Street. County officials plan to build the new Kent courthouse on the East Main Street location. Councilwoman Tracy Wallach cast the only vote against the land buy and swap. Councilman John Kuhar was absent Wednesday. Kent City Manager Dave Ruller said the price …

Jimmy John's to get $15,000 from City to Move

Restaurant must find a new location to make way for the new county courthouse

A relocation forced onto popular Kent sub shop Jimmy John's won't happen without a slight reimbursement from the city. The restuarant will get $15,000 from the city to help make a move necessary for the new Kent branch of the Portage County Municipal Courthouse. The cash for moving expenses, approved Wednesday night by Kent City Council, comes with two conditions: the restaurant must relocate within city limits, and it must be out of its East Main Street location by June 1 so the county can start construction on the new courthouse. "We just gave $250,000 to build a courthouse that wasn’t our responsibility," Councilwoman Tracy Wallach said in reference to a vote taken minutes earlier on the new courthouse. "I see no problem giving $15,000 …

UPDATE: Settlement in Eviction Case Gives Jimmy John's Until June to Move

Restaurant will be demolished next summer to make way for Kent's new courthouse

Attorneys for the Kent Jimmy John's owner and the restaurant's landlord reached an out-of-court settlement this morning in the sandwich shop's eviction case. The popular eatery will stay at its East Main Street location until May 31 of 2012. Starting June 1, the property owner has the right to start razing the sub shop to make way for the new Kent courthouse. Under the settlement agreement, reached before a hearing set this morning at 8:15 a.m. in the Kent Municipal Courthouse, the property owner, Schweigert Properties Inc. of Akron, will pay an undisclosed amount to the restaurant. David Hilkert, an Akron attorney representing Schweigert Properties, said the payment to the restaurant owner will be held in abeyance until May 31. "That …
