UPDATE: Fire Destroys Vacant Kent State Esplanade House

One firefighter injured in early Saturday morning blaze

An early morning fire destroyed a vacant house on South Lincoln Street right next to the Kent State University campus today. The Kent Fire Department responded at 5:23 a.m. to the call of a fully involved house fire at 128 S. Lincoln St. Acting Kent Fire Lt. Steve Smith said one firefighter was injured when he fell through a collapsed floor. "Shortly after the crews got there the second floor partially collapsed onto the first floor," Smith said. The firefighter, whose name was not released, was treated for minor injuries and released from Akron City Hospital Saturday. The house is owned by Kent State University and was bought from A&H Investments Joint Venture LLC in August 2011 for $464,000 as part of the Esplanade expansion. It was …

Kent State Buys House for Esplanade Expansion

University to spend $315,000 for house on South Lincoln Street

Officials at Kent State University agreed today to pay $315,000 for a house on South Lincoln Street that could be one of the last land buys for the Esplanade extension. The Kent State University Board of Trustees voted this afternoon to buy the house at 122 S. Lincoln St. from the Joseph N. Murray Trust. The house is likely one of the last pieces of property to be bought for construction of the sweeping pedestrian pathway that will link the campus to the major redevelopment projects under way downtown, including the new Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center. The Esplanade extension will travel directly west from the atrium of the Kent State Museum to Haymaker Parkway, where it will meet a new stop light at the intersection of …

Petitioners Buy Time for House with Historic Ties to Kent

Kent State, city officials investigating significance of Erie Street house

The wrecking crews have been called off — for now — for a house some in the Kent community say has significant ties to the city's history. Officials at Kent State University and the city are reviewing the possible historic significance of the house at 250 E. Erie St. after one Kent resident sparked a social movement online to save it from demolition. The house, dubbed the Sherman House, stands in the path of the university's Esplande extension from campus towards downtown, and several houses have already been demolished to make way for the new pathway. Construction on the Esplanade is scheduled to start this spring. The campaign, started by Kent resident Sally Burnell, urges the university to save the building and possibly turn it into a …

Kent State Demolishes House on North Lincoln

Demolition is second this month on North Lincoln Street following Robin Hood razing

Only rubble remains of the house that stood at 202 N. Lincoln St. following its demolition by Kent State University. The city issued a demolition permit to the university Friday for the house, which the Kent State Foundation obtained in 2008. The property is adjacent to the parking lot for the Kent State Lincoln Building. The demolition is the second in two weeks on North Lincoln Street following the March 12 demolition of the Robin Hood Inn at the corner of East Main and North Lincoln streets.
