Downtown Food Vendors Relocated to Franklin Avenue

Council approves moving temporary vendor locations to beneath the Haymaker Parkway overpass

Mobile food vendors who set up shop in the evenings in downtown Kent are going to lose their prime spots starting in 2013. Kent City Council voted this week to relocate the designated locations for vendors with the category A license from five spots spread throughout downtown to one location on Franklin Avenue beneath the Haymaker Parkway overpass. Kent Law Director Jim Silver said city officials started to consider relocating the category A vendors after problems with towing cars from designated vending spots, such as the space near the intersection of Main and Water streets in the middle of downtown. "Issues began as soon as we actually had vendors start setting up downtown," Silver said. "Vendors would show, the parking spaces …

Chip, this is nothing more than Ruller moving these venders in hopes people eat and visit these brand new buildings they just spent a ton of money on that could fail according to Dave Ruller. Heres a better solution, keep everything as is, 4 or 5 spots is NOT harming anything downtown in these evening hours. It is nice of Dave Ruller to kick out a local kent guy like Dawgfather. I am so sick of …   more ›

Mural Vandalized at Haymaker Farmer's Market

Mural by artist Elaine Hullihen finished just weeks before vandals strike

It didn't take long for vandals to strike the freshly painted mural at the Haymaker Farmer's Market. Market manager Kelly Ferry discovered a graffiti tag on the new mural this weekend. Artist Elaine Hullihen just weeks ago finished the mural, which includes a special overcoat designed to protect against graffiti. Hullihen said the tag should be removable with an application of mineral spirits without causing any damage to the art. The market planned a dedication for the new mural Saturday but postponed the ceremony due to weather. Check Kent Patch for updates to this story. MORE COVERAGE:

Laurel, we shared the photo with the hopes that someone could ID the tagger and report him to police for vandalism. The tag has already been removed from the bridge.   more ›

Haymaker Market gets $38,000 Grant for EBT Service

City, market receive money through joint application

EBT service at the Haymaker Farmer's Market just got a big boost. The city and the market received $38,000 from a joint application to expand the use of electronic benefits transfer, or EBT, cards at the weekly outdoor market. The grant will allow the market to promote it's EBT or Ohio Direction Card. The card acts like a bank debit card and holds food assistance benefits for residents in the program, according to the Ohio EBT website. Haymaker Market manager Kelly Ferry said the grant will expand access to the market for Kent families. "I'm excited for the opportunity to develop creative new ways to introduce more families in our community to the benefits of buying local at the market, and to continue building partnerships with other …

Why don't you take it up with the USDA, rather than criticize our local folks who are just trying to promote the market through a grant that I am sure many farmer's markets were competing for? The program is available, the money is being handed out, why not go for it and make our market a popular place to shop? It's like the stimulus program, you could tell Kent not to apply, but hey, the money …   more ›

Around Town and Gown

Canvas for Haymaker Market Mural Nearly Ready

First coat of primer rolled on Friday, second coat coming on Sunday

It's not very often you can look at a blank canvas and see the exhaustive hours, the days soaked in sweat and the months of preparation behind the effort. But that's exactly what you'll see if you visit the Haymaker Farmers Market today during the Kent Heritage Festival. Elaine Hullihen has spent the past month blasting the layered years of old paint from the abutments of the Haymaker Parkway overpass bridge to ready the surface for a new mural to mark the spot of the farmers market. The local artist and Kent Patch columnist has been working on the mural proposal and design for more than a year. For the past month, Hullihen and a number of volunteers have used a power washer, chisels and paint stripper to try and coax decades of paint from…

Artist preps for Mural at Haymaker Farmers Market

Art work will adorn columns and lintels of Haymaker Parkway overpass bridge

Old started to give way to new this morning, as Kent artist and Kent Patch columnist Elaine Hullihen blasted graffiti and old paint off the supports of the Haymaker Parkway overpass bridge. Hullihen is the artist chosen to paint a new art mural on the supports and lintels of the bridge to celebrate and mark the spot of the Haymaker Farmers Market, which holds its weekly open-air market in the shadows of the bridge on Franklin Avenue. Using a power washer, Hullihen and a few volunteers worked to remove the old paint and graffiti to prep the surface for the new mural, which will incorporate scenes of the market and Kent’s history throughout. The mural is expected to be finished this summer. To read Hullihen's coverage of the Kent arts scene…

The Haymaker Farmers Market is looking for volunteers to help prepare the columns and supports of the Haymaker overpass for a new art mural. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday volunteers and market members will be removing paint from the concrete supports of the Haymaker Parkway overpass at the market site on Franklin Avenue. The paint is being removed to prepare for installation of a mural by Kent artist Elaine Hullihen to celebrate the market and put its stamp on the location. Hullihen will incorporate scenes of the market and Kent’s history throughout the mural to be painted on the columns and lintels of the bridge. For Kent Community TimeBank members, you can read the time bank listing about Thursday's work party here (this link will not …
