City applying for $25,000 ODNR grant
City officials are hopeful to replace some of the trees and greenery removed for downtown construction via a grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Kent development officials plan to submit a grant application to the ODNR, which is offering grants to projects that promote restoration of urban tree canopies. Kent Community Development Department Director Bridget Susel said there is no local cash match required, and the city can request up to $25,000. "We can actually use it to replace tree canopy that’s been removed for economic development initiatives," Susel said. "And needless to say, we have done that." The application is due Nov. 30. The Holden Garden Project at Holden Elementary School was awarded a $2,000 grant from the Whole Kids Foundation, founded by Whole Foods Market. The Whole Kids Foundation, founded by Whole Foods Market, received an overwhelming number of applications from across the nation for the grant. Just 1,000 projects out of 3,000 applicants will be funded. The Whole Kids Foundation School Garden Grant Program offers grants to individuals and organizations ready to build, expand or renew their own school garden. The mission of Whole Kids Foundation is to “support schools and inspire families to improve children's nutrition and wellness.” With this goal in mind, the grant was written by garden volunteer Lynn Gregor with help from Holden Elementary …

(Press release) Kent State University will receive a $225,000 economic development grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assist businesses in rural Ohio communities. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently announced the selection of Kent State and 35 other organizations in 26 states and the District of Columbia for grants to help rural cooperatives and small businesses expand, create jobs and strengthen their capacity to serve rural citizens and communities. Proposal could make city money available for neighborhood beautification projects
You may not be able to build a fence to stop late-night foot traffic, but you can plant some flowers and paint a few houses under a new neighborhood improvement program proposed in Kent. City administrators pitched the idea of a new grant program to Kent City Council that would make money available to a group of neighbors looking to improve their neighborhood. Kent City Manager Dave Ruller said the city has already beefed up city ordinances and enforcement of zoning and other codes to try and compel people to maintain their properties. I don't think the replanting of trees is any less important then education. I also think a cop or two downtown on Friday and Saturday nite ( walking ) is a good idea, with the small tax on alcohol licenses earmarked for the extra security.   more ›
