Free Parking Added Downtown on Gougler Avenue

Change approved by parking committee part of long-term parking plan

About 30 free, unrestricted parking spaces will be added to downtown Kent on Gougler Avenue. The Kent Parking Action Committee voted Thursday to change the existing restrictions on spaces on Gougler Avenue north of Park Avenue to offer free parking with no time limits. Prior to the change, many of the spaces were either limited to a 2-hour time restriction or required a permit. “We feel that area is very underutilized," Kent Service Director Gene Roberts said. The change is similar to one made in 2011 that added free, all-day parking spaces on Franklin Avenue near Summit Street. Cause of Fire at F&CS Under Investigation

Damage to social services building estimated at $80,000

It will be a few days before investigators with the Kent Fire Department determine what started a fire that caused an estimated $80,000 damage at the Family & Community Services building Wednesday. Acting Kent Fire Chief Dave Manthey said investigators are sending some samples from the fire scene to the Ohio Fire Marshal's Office for testing. Sending samples to the state fire marshal's office is standard procedure and does not indicate arson, but investigators aren't ruling it out, Manthey said. "We don’t want to rule it out, but we just want to cover all our bases," he said.
