Kent State Students Raise $9,300 for Local Charities

Fall semester course part of communications college

Twenty-seven students in four small groups raised more than $9,300 in funds and canned goods for local charities in the fall semester as part of the Communication in Small Groups and Teams course taught by Rebecca Cline, Ph.D., professor in the School of Communication Studies at Kent State University. Students designed projects to help people in poverty, people with cancer and their families, and the homeless. Each project benefitted a specific local population through donations to the Campus Kitchen on the Kent State University Campus, the Phyllis Zumkehr County Clothing Center in Ravenna, Stewart’s Caring Place in Fairlawn and the ACCESS shelter for homeless women and children in Summit County.  Each of the four groups implemented an …

Fundraiser Benefits New Preschool at St. Patrick's

'Vegas Night' Saturday offers chance to view plans for 7,000 square foot addition to catholic school

St. Patrick's School is expanding with plans for a new preschool, and Saturday members of the Kent community will get a sneak peek at the proposed 7,000 square foot facility. The school is sponsoring a "Vegas Night" to kick off the fundraising campaign for the new preschool, which will serve children ages 3 through 5. Angela Davis, the preschool project coordinator at St. Patrick's, said Saturday's fundraiser is important if the school wants to meet its goal of breaking ground in September. "What has to happen on our end, being a private school, we need to have half of our funds in the bank before we’re allowed to break ground," Davis said. "That's our goal." She declined to say how much the school needs to raise for the entire project. …

Victims of Domestic Violence Benefit at Kent State

Fundraiser supports Portage County's Safer Futures shelter

The Kent State University Museum will host a fundraiser for victims of domestic violence in Kent and Portage County Oct. 22. "Hope in a Handbag" silent auction will be held in the atrium of the museum at the School of Fashion Design and Merchandising. New and gently used handbags, purses and clutches will be up for auction with all proceeds to benefit Safer Futures, the domestic violence shelter in Portage County run by Family and Community Services. In 2010, the shelter responded to close to 1,000 requests for service and provided shelter in a safe, confidential location for 100 victims of domestic violence. “Maintaining our shelter 24 hours a day, 7days a week requires a lot of resources," said Anne Lofaro Face, director of shelter …

Inaugural 'Rider Rumble' Saturday at Larry's Stables

Nature race fundraiser benefits police, fire in Kent

Matt Campana’s voice booms with excitement on the phone. He calls me to see if I need directions or anything else about a half hour before we arranged to meet at Larry’s Stable, site of Saturday’s inaugural Rider Rumble. When I arrive, Campana says he wants to take me on a tour of the terrain by cart. The Rider Rumble is a roughly three-mile nature race with multiple heats/start times from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday. Participants can register online or in person Saturday. Registration includes a free T-shirt and costs $50 for adults, $35 for students or team and $15 for children ages 5 to 12. There will be a scaled-back children’s course across the street. Proceeds from the race will benefit the Kent Police and Kent Fire departments…

Packed House for Don Beckett Reverse Raffle

Big crowd turned out to support Kent firefighter battling cancer

The Kent Firefighters Association held a reverse raffle to benefit Don Beckett, a Kent firefighter who is in a battle with inoperable esophageal cancer. Friday night's fundraiser included dinner, games, and raffles for those who attended. The event raised $16,000 to support the Beckett family. That follows a $5,000 fundraiser started by Don Joseph Toyota on Facebook to help the family cover medical expenses. Beckett, a 22-year veteran of the department, is on extended sick leave from the fire department as he undergoes treatment.

'Beer for Boobs' Supports Three-Day Cancer Walk

Stelvis and The Graceland Band will perform at Cajun Dave's fundraiser Saturday

Those visiting the Water Street Tavern and Cajun Dave’s restaurant between 5 and 8 p.m. Saturday may be surprised to see pink “Beer for Boobs” posters on the walls as Stelvis and The Graceland Band rock out on the stage. It’s not a parallel universe, but a charity benefit to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure breast-cancer awareness walk. This is the second year that Brian Bower, Cajun Dave’s co-owner, has had a team in the three-day, 60-mile walk held in late July in the Cleveland area. Each team member is charged with raising $2,300. In Bower’s case, that translates to $4,600, as his wife, Nichole, is also on the team. Bower formed “Team Boobdacious Bowers” in memory of his mother and grandmother, both of whom were …

Update: Facebook Fundraiser for Kent Firefighter Hits Goal

Don Joseph Toyota raises $5,000 in six days for firefighter Don Beckett

In six days, a Facebook fundraiser run by Don Joseph Toyota in Kent met its goal of raising $2,500 for a Kent firefighter battling cancer. The  long-established, family-run dealership started a campaign April 21 asking people to "friend" their Facebook page and write "Team Beckett" on their wall. For every person who did so, the dealership pledged to donate $1 to Don Beckett, a 22-year veteran firefighter who was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in December. Beckett is on extended leave from the Kent fire department as he undergoes intense cancer treatments. Jessica Joseph, general sales manager for her father's dealership, said they met the goal this morning with more than 2,500 people taking part in the online fundraiser. Toyota …
