The company, best known for its floral foam packaging used in flower shops around the globe, broke ground on the new addition recently. The Kent Board of Zoning Appeals approved plans for the expansion in October. The firm had outgrown its original greenhouse used for research. New Downtown Shop Plans Expansion

Popped! adding space to handle internet, corporate orders

Gwen Rosenberg has grand plans for her little popcorn shop, Popped!, in downtown Kent's Acorn Alley. For starters, it's not going to be so little anymore. Rosenberg is planning to expand into space on the third floor of Acorn Alley II, directly above her existing shop, to handle the abundance of internet and corporate orders that have come through both her physical and digital doorways. "Downstairs, the space is limited," Rosenberg said. "I didn't think it was limited when I opened it." The specialty popcorn store opened in the summer of 2011, and since then the Kent mom has enjoyed a brisk business for her offerings of kettle, caramel and more creative varieties of popcorn. The store marked its grand opening earlier this year. As a …

Tree City certainly isn't committed to providing ADA seating like they should do, and like they promised me they were gonna do. I visited their establishment a week after they opened, and one of the owners mentioned in the article above, told me he was gonna get an ADA table, and he never made sure it happened. So I won't go back until they do, and if they never do, then I'll never be back!   more ›

Dodge Street Machine Shop gets OK to Expand

Zoning board grants variance for 5,300 square feet addition

A machine shop planning to add at least 5,300 square feet of manufacturing space has the go ahead from the Kent Board of Zoning Appeals to do so. The board granted Copen Machine a variance Monday to allow a building addition to come about two feet from a property easement the business granted to the city of Kent about seven years ago. The board voted unanimously to grant the business a 48-foot variance from the 50-foot minimum front yard setback requirement. Travis Copen, president of Copen Machine, said the variance to come within 2 feet of the easement is necessary because several public easements on their property make expansion within zoning codes difficult. "We need the 5,300 square feet to do what we need to do," he said. "This is …
