South Lincoln to Close for 30 Days Tuesday

Esplanade construction forces closure of roadway near Kent State campus

South Lincoln Street will close for 30 days starting Tuesday so Kent State University can continue work to extend the Esplanade from campus to downtown Kent. The road will be closed from East Main Street to Hilltop Drive. The road is scheduled to reopen Friday, June 28. Workers will be installing the brick work for the pedestrian pathway in the South Lincoln Street roadway so the path can continue its march from Kent State, through the neighborhood west of campus and up to the Kent State University Hotel and Conference Center. Both city and university officials anticipate the path will open in July. On its way downtown, the Esplanade also will cross South Willow Street, which city officials are considering closing permanently for the …

Historic House Inches Toward Esplanade

Kent State moves May Prentice House across Willow Street

Stein House Movers spent several hours in the freezing cold Thursday moving the historic May Prentice House across South Willow Street. The house will serve as the new home of the Wick Poetry Center at Kent State University and will stand across the Esplanade from the new College of Architecture and Environmental Design. The house, the former home of Kent State's first female faculty member, was moved in February 2012 so that construction on the Esplanade, the pedestrian trail linking the campus to downtown Kent, could proceed. The house had stood at 128 S. Willow St. — directly in the path of the new walkway — and had temporarily been moved to the western side of the road. The house will be moved near its final spot so that a permanent …

Kent State to Move Historic House Today

May Prentice House to be moved from its temporary spot on Willow Street to Esplanade

After more than a year in its temporary home the May Prentice House will be relocated today to its permanent resting place on the Esplanade. Kent State University is again moving the historic house, the former home of Kent State's first female faculty member. The house was moved in February 2012 so that construction on the Esplanade, the pedestrian trail linking the campus to downtown Kent, could proceed. The house had stood at 128 S. Willow St. — directly in the path of the new walkway. The house will serve as the new home of the Wick Poetry Center and will stand across the Esplanade from the new College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Willow Street to Close Wednesday

Esplanade construction will force closure of street between East Main Street and East College Avenue

Starting Wednesday South Willow Street will close between East Main Street and East College Avenue. That portion of the road will be closed until Monday, April 22, for construction on Kent State University's Esplanade project. That work is expected to include the movement of the May Prentice House on March 20 as part of the Wick Poetry Center relocation to the Esplanade. City and university officials are weighing the idea of permanently closing this stretch of Willow Street.

Well, Mr. Williams, go and stand at the intersection of South Lincoln and Main and watch what happens when classes let out at various times and when a bus stops on Lincoln in front of Starbucks. At the same time, there are a lot of pedestrians. It is extremely busy, and with the increase in enrollment, will get busier. And should Lincoln be closed for some reason, without the availability of …   more ›

Wick Center to Join Architecture College on Esplanade

Poetry center to relocate to Esplanade walkway linking Kent State campus to downtown

Kent State University's Wick Poetry Center will relocate to a new poetry park and building to stand on the Esplanade that, when finished this year, will link campus to downtown Kent. David Hassler, director of the Wick Poetry Center, said they will relocate to the May Prentice House, which will stand off South Lincoln Street behind the Starbucks building and directly across the Esplanade from the new College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Hassler said the relocation project will incorporate an interactive poetry park, which will allow people to interact with interchangeable poetry posters via their smart phone or tablet device. He said the park creates both a physical greenspace to bridge the town and gown, but it also creates a…

Thanks for providing the website information re the poetry center. It's hard to believe that it was established almost thirty years ago. Time sure flies! Robert (I knew him as Bob), in addition of his wonderful artistic talents, could really throw a baseball. Back in the 1960's we walked over to the front lawn of Roosevelt (now Davey Elementary) and I tried to catch him. One pitch and I said "…   more ›

Kent Fire Officer Honored for Saving Firefighter from Burning House

Acting Kent Fire Capt. Bill Myers receives commendation, proclamation for pulling injured firefighter from house fire

If not for Kent Fire Lt. Bill Myers, firefighter Bryan Pengal's head-first fall into a burning basement might have turned out much worse. Kent Fire Chief Dave Manthey and members of Kent City Council recognized Myers Wednesday for helping pull Pengal out of a house fire that destroyed a house owned by Kent State University on South Lincoln Street last month. Myers, then an acting captain, and Pengal were among the first crew to respond to the fire at 128 S. Lincoln St. at about 5:30 a.m. Nov. 10. Manthey said both men advanced into the house with a hose line to find the base of the fire and extinguish it. "As they made their way through the smoke they did not see a section of the floor in front of them was missing," Manthey said. Pengal …

POLL: Closing South Willow Street for Esplanade Project

Take our poll and tell us in the comments what you think.

Kent Patch broke the news Friday that Kent State University is studying the idea of closing a portion of South Willow Street in the neighborhood west of campus. Ultimately, city officials will have the final say as to whether the section of the street between College Avenue and Main Street is closed for the Esplanade extension, which has seen Kent State spend more than $9 million on 43 properties for the project since at least 2007. The new leg of the Esplanade, the on-campus section of The Portage Bike and Hike Trail, is under construction in the neighborhood and will link campus to downtown. This new section will cut directly across South Willow Street. Kent State owns every property but one lining both sides of South Willow Street …

Yes, but to sell it for what they offered would cut my standard of living drastically, and I mean DRASTICALLY! I bought it in December of 1977 when I started planning for retirement. As you probably know from driving by, I keep it very nice. The inside is nice, too. And my rents are about half of what the dorms charge. And it is not in the way of the esplanade. This whole thing is very stressful …   more ›

City May Close Willow Street for Esplanade

Kent State, city officials reviewing possibility of closing section of street between Main Street and College Avenue

Now that Kent State University owns much of the land surrounding it city and university officials are considering permanently closing a portion of South Willow Street. Since 2007 Kent State has spent more than $9 million to either outright buy properties or property options in the neighborhood west of campus for the Esplanade extension. In total, including the house sale approved Wednesday, the university will have acquired 43 properties in that neighborhood — including every property but one lining both sides of South Willow Street between College Avenue and Main Street. Kent City Manager Dave Ruller said university officials haven't yet formally asked the city to consider closing the street, but both sides are reviewing the idea. "They'…

This would create a real hardship on small businesses on the south side of Main St. between Willow and Lincoln. When Willow was closed a few weeks ago for water line work we heard nothing but complaints from customers about parking and access. Is the plan to close Willow from Main to College or can there still be enough of Willow to allow access to parking?   more ›

Kent State Buys House for Esplanade

Acquisition will bring total number of properties bought for expansion to 43

Kent State University's Board of Trustees agreed Wednesday to buy another property in the neighborhood west of campus in order to expand the Esplanade into downtown Kent. The board voted to buy the house at 213 S. Willow St. from the Portage Metropolitan Housing Authority for its appraised value of $200,000. The house sits on about 0.27 acres. The buy will bring Kent State's total spent on property for the project to about $9.1 million. It will be the 43rd property acquired for the Esplanade expansion. RELATED COVERAGE:

People probably loved, laughed, raised children, cried, and perhaps died in that house. Oh, what the walls could tell. Now it's being torn down for a sidewalk. Alas! A cruel fate. Seems a pity...   more ›

Kent State to Raze 10 More Houses for Esplanade

Properties all owned by university

Kent State University is getting ready to demolish 10 more houses in the neighborhood west of campus for construction of the Esplanade. A fire almost completely destroyed the house at 128 S. Lincoln St. in November. And 128 S. Lincoln St. is where …

Unfortunately, running a university has become more of a business. With state funding cuts, Ohio's universities have to worry about the bottom line more than ever. The addition of this entrance is all about attracting students. When parents being their children to campus they want to see beauty. Most don't understand educational quality, faculty accomplishments or placement rates. They do …   more ›
