Drunken Driving Checkpoint in Portage County Saturday

The exact location and time will be announced Saturday morning.

On Saturday evening, the Ohio State Highway Patrol will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint somewhere in Portage County.  The exact location of the checkpoint won't be released until Saturday morning.  The checkpoint, funded by federal grant funds, is planned to deter and intercept impaired drivers. "Based on provisional data, there were 332 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 359 people were killed last year and 7,507injured in Ohio," Lt. Nakia Hendrix, commander of the Ravenna Post, said. "State troopers make on average 25,000 OVIarrests each year in combating these dangerous drivers. Checkpoint on State Route 43 Saturday Evening

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will be looking for drunk drivers in Brimfield Aug. 25, 2012.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced Saturday morning that it will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint in Brimfield with the help of the Brimfield Police Department.  The exact location is at mile post 9 in Brimfield from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. The OVI checkpoint, funded by federal grant funds, is planned to deter and intercept impaired drivers.  "If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don’t let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired," according to a press release from the patrol. Drunken Driving Checkpoint (Somewhere) This Week

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said it will announce the location the morning of the operation.

There will be an OVI checkpoint somewhere in the area this week, but the Ohio State Highway Patrol has not announced the location or day yet. The patrol announced in a press release Monday morning from Ravenna that sometime in the next seven days a sobriety checkpoint will be set up to "deter and intercept impaired drivers."  The day before the checkpoint is set up, the county where it will take place will be announced. Caution: Drunken Driving Checkpoint Friday, Here's Where it's Happening

Find out where in Portage County police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint tonight until Saturday morning.

Brimfield Township, OH — This morning, the Ohio State Highway Patrol announced that a checkpoint will be set up on State Route 43 near milepost 9 in Brimfield Township. The checkpoint will be conducted from 10 p.m. tonight until 3 a.m. Saturday morning. The checkpoints are federally funded and local police departments assist in the operation. The purpose is to "deter and intercept impaired drivers," according to the OSHP. I believe they have to release this information to the media, as a result of some lawsuit/legal action a few years ago. Whether the media outlet wants to publish it is up to them. But, these things -- although announced -- still nab people.   more ›

Sobriety Checkpoint Location on S.R. 59 Announced

The checkpoint will be set up from 10 p.m. April 14 until 2 a.m. April 15

The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced the drunk driving checkpoint in Portage County April 14 will be set up on State Route 59 in Kent near milepost 3. The checkpoint, funded by federal grants, will be conducted with the help of the Kent Police Department from 10 p.m. Saturday April 14 until 2 a.m. Sunday April 15.  "The checkpoint will also be held in conjunction with nearby saturation patrols to aggressively combat alcohol-related injury and fatal crashes," according to a press release.  The most recent checkpoint in Brimfield on St. Patrick's Day nabbed 17 drunk drivers.

The police are required by law to do it. I just don't like seeing media outlets & folks using social media to publicize these spots - it just makes it easier for drunks to avoid them & drive drunk elsewhere.   more ›

Nakia Hendrix, commander of the Ravenna Post, said. “State troopers make on average 25,000 OVI arrests each year in combating these dangerous drivers. OVI checkpoints are designed to not only deter impaired driving, but to proactively remove these dangerous drivers from our roadways.” The latest checkpoint was in Portage County in Brimfield on St. Patrick's Day. Officers arrested 17 for drunk driving.

Sobriety Checkpoint South of Kent Nets 17 Drunken Drivers

St. Patrick's Day ended unhappily for 17 people who left Kent and drove south late Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Seventeen drivers were charged with drunk driving Saturday after being stopped at a sobriety checkpoint on S.R. 43 just south of Kent. The checkpoint, run by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Portage County Sheriff's Office and Brimfield Police, screened 582 cars total between 10 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday. Of those 582 cars, 23 cars were diverted, according to the highway patrol. A total 25 people were arrested. Hit-Skip Driver Leads Police on 4-mile Chase

A Kent welder is in jail today after leading police on a nearly 4 mile chase after crashing into a car and speeding away. Perry L. Bivins, 47, of Ravenna, faces numerous charges, including drunk driving, after an early morning crash near the intersection of S.R. 261 and South Water Street. Bivins crashed into the back of a car driven by Tina M. Scherer, a Brimfield resident, just after midnight on March 3, according to Portage County court records. "After that, he took off," Kent Police Lt. Paul Canfield said. "There was a short chase." Police followed Bivins east on S.R. 261 until he turned onto S.R. 59 and started driving towards Ravenna.
