Artists Give Their Slant on Future of Portage County

Kent State University's Downtown Gallery teams up with The North Water Street Gallery on show inspired by TransPORTAGE

"Portage Slant: A Future In-Sight" is a multi-gallery art show that brings together so many things that are really great about Kent it's silly.  Actually, I take that back. It's not silly. It's incredibly useful, inventive and refreshing. When organizations that are concerned with our lives both economically and culturally come together to create projects that involve our community, I can only imagine these ideas echoing ever louder and longer in the minds of our friends, family and neighbors. First you have the Kent State University's Downtown Gallery that always hosts well-made, interesting art from our region. It is headed by Gallery Director Anderson Turner. Kent State School of Art Opens Season

Kent State's School of Art Gallery and Downtown Gallery show diversity in artistry

The shows currently on view at the Kent State art galleries are oddly coupled.  But that's what makes them so interesting.  In the School of Art Gallery on the Kent State campus is "Therely Bare," an exhibition curated by John Tallman and Ron Buffington that centers around ideas of non-objective art. This is a style of art that contains no recognizable figures or objects.  In Kent State's Downtown Gallery, Eric England presents a solo show called "Imprint" inspired by pop culture comic book characters and primitive totems and dolls.  In this show, England uses recognizable figures to create meaning in the work. Artists Inspired by Artists at TANK Exhibit

Every artist has experienced a moment when they were drawn to something. This initial attraction then blossoms into inspiration, and that's when an idea begins to form.  While these inspirations are found in every part of life, they often come from, and are cultivated through, other artists. Many artists spend years working alongside their artist friends bouncing ideas around and "talking shop," so to speak. These relationships can be very rewarding. (And let's just say it, sometimes they are the only ones who get it. Or even want to get it.)
