Calling Hours Wednesday for Roosevelt Teen Devon Deonta Conwell

The 15-year-old affectionately known as "Big Daddy D" passed away on April 17, 2013.

Calling hours are set for the Theodore Roosevelt High School student who died unexpectedly last week during a basketball practice in Twinsburg.  Devon Deonta "Big Daddy D" Conwell passed away on April 17, 2013. The 15-year-old sophomore played football and basketball at the high school. Kent City Schools Superintendent Joseph Giancola said Conwell collapsed suddenly at a non-school basketball practice. "Devon Conwell was one of those students who everybody loved," Giancola said. "He had a contagious smile." It's unclear what caused Conwell's sudden death Wednesday evening. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Theodore Roosevelt High School Auditorium. Funeral services will follow. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may…

Editor's note: this story was updated at 6:30 p.m. Students at Theodore Roosevelt High School are struggling with the loss of a fellow student and friend today. Devon Conwell, a sophomore at Theodore Roosevelt, died Wednesday unexpectedly during a basketball practice in Twinsburg. Kent City Schools Superintendent Joseph Giancola said Conwell collapsed suddenly at a non-school basketball practice. "Devon Conwell was one of those students who everybody loved," Giancola said. No Charges in Crash that Killed Kent State Professor

No charges will be filed in the death of a Kent State University emeritus professor who died shortly after being struck by a car in January near his Kent home. The death of Gordon F. Vars has been ruled an accident by police and coroner officials. Vars, 88, died Jan. 31 after he was hit while walking across Fairchild Avenue in front of his house late at night. Kent Police Capt. Paul Canfield said the department's accident reconstruction expert including information from the final coroner's report in reviewing the case. "Our investigation reveals that the driver was at or near the speed limit, and it was just a bad set of circumstances that led to the collision," Canfield said. Kent Man Dies After Suicide Attempt in Jail

Cause of death not released for Matthew Dibease

Portage County authorities are investigating the death of a Kent man who tried to kill himself in jail Friday. Portage County Sheriff David Doak said that Matthew P. Dibease, 29, of 408 Park Avenue, attempted suicide at the Portage County jail after being booked into the jail just before 2 p.m. Friday. Dibease was taken from the county jail on Infirmary Road to Robinson Memorial Hospital. He died later at the hospital. Doak said Dibease was in his cell when he attempted suicide. Doak wouldn't say how Dibease tried to kill himself. "We’re not going to disclose that right now because it’s still under investigation," Doak said. Man Found Dead in Kent State Residence Hall

Unidentified male discovered Sunday in Leebrick Hall

Homecoming weekend at Kent State University came to a tragic end Sunday when a body was discovered in a residence hall. An unidentified male was found Sunday afternoon on the fourth floor of Leebrick Hall, which is a part of the Tri-Towers dorm complex off Loop Road on the eastern edge of campus. The cause of death is unknown. The chief investigator for the Portage County Coroner's Office, Tom Decker, said the man's body was found between 5:30 and 6 p.m. Decker said how long the man lay dead before he was found "has not been determined yet." Kent State spokesperson Emily Vincent told Kent Wired university officials didn't yet have the man's ID, so it's unknown if he was a student or just visiting campus. I think it's a case of sounding a lot simpler than it is rather than ignoring it. Leebrick Hall is 12 stories and has a few hundred rooms. Trying to pinpoint the source of an odor in a building that large (even on one floor) with so many rooms and people takes lots of time. I just think how hard it can be to find the source of odors in my own house, let alone a multi-story dorm. It's very …   more ›

UPDATE: Suspect Lived in Apartment Where He Fatally Shot Woman

Police have issued a statewide search for Jose Quinones

Updated at 8:43 a.m. Updated at 12:25 p.m. Updated at 4:37 p.m. A woman is dead and a man injured following a shooting at 757 Akron Boulevard Sunday night. Officers were called to the scene at approximately 10:30 p.m., according to dispatch. Police have named 52-year-old Jose Quinones as the suspect. He is accused of killing Belinda Mellott, 49, and injuring Gregory Cochran, 35. Mellott was pronounced dead at the scene by the Portage County Coroner, according to police. Police say Cochran was taken to Akron City Hospital, but when calls are made for his condition, the operator says he isn't listed. The arrest warrant shows Quinones lived at the apartment with Mellott. There was also a Cleveland address on the warrant where Quinones …
