Dunkin' Donuts Cleared for Construction

New doughnut, coffee shop could be open by fall

The owner of the new Dunkin' Donuts planned at the former site of a gas station at 525 E. Main St. across from Kent State University has the green light for construction. City building officials recently issued a building permit for construction on the new eatery, which is projected to cost $700,000 to build, according to the permit. Ken Bloom, the franchisee who will operate the store, told the city's planning commission last fall that construction will take three to four months on the building. At the earliest, the new Dunkin' Donuts could be open by September 2013.

Looks good from the drawings. Parking may be a little light but I think most business will be in and out, drive thru and students out walking.   more ›

2012 Income Tax Collections Up 13 Percent Over 2011

Kent collected $12,063,299 in total income tax receipts for 2012; boost may erase projected deficit

Income tax revenue for the city of Kent saw a double-digit increase in 2012 over 2011, as the total collected rose 12.6 percent. Kent collected $12,063,299 in total income tax revenue last year compared with $10,711,766 in the year prior. City administrators originally projected $10.9 million in revenue for 2012 . The large increase last year marks the early start of an upward trend in collections for the Tree City after being hit hard by the Great Recession, which saw Kent's income tax revenue start a decline in 2008 that lasted through 2010. Income tax revenue started to rise in 2011, which saw a 2.5 percent increase above 2010 collections. Kent Budget and Finance Director Dave Coffee said the 12.6 percent increase for 2012 is a welcome …

New Senior Housing Gets OK to Start Construction

NRP Group issued building permit for 68-unit Maple Brook at Four Seasons

Construction can start on the new senior housing units planned for vacant land adjacent to KentRidge at Golden Pond. The Kent Community Development Department issued a building permit to Cleveland-based NRP Group this month for construction of the $4.9 million, 68-unit Maple Brook at Four Seasons, which will be built at 5241 Sunnybrook Road. Joseph McCabe, project manager for NRP Group, said previously the project is on track to open by December 2013. The units are targetted specifically for low-income seniors and in April the Ohio Housing Finance Agency awarded $1.2 million for the project. The housing will be targeted at seniors with a yearly income ranging from $15,000 to $30,000.

Snapshot: New Courthouse Construction Progressing

Site work gives impression of building's size

Construction has been under way at the site of the new Kent courthouse for a few months now, but there's a unique perspective that gives you an impression of the building's size. The view of the construction site from the Kent Historical Society shows more than what's visible from East Main Street — the view most drivers and pedestrians see of the project.

Trail Linking Tannery to Fred Fuller Parks Nearly Finished

$875,000 project included $700,000 AMATS grant

The new trail linking John Brown Tannery Park to Fred Fuller Park isn't officially open because construction is ongoing. Yet Kent residents are using the trail — which is about 95 percent finished — anyway. Kent Parks and Recreation Director John Idone said the new path, part of the countywide Portage Bike and Hike Trail, is meant to bring people who otherwise would not have access, such as seniors, people in wheelchairs and families with strollers, to the scenic banks of the Cuyahoga River. "Families are the big thing," he said. "It's essentially open now. We're trying to keep people off of it, but once the concrete went down it's really hard to keep people off of it." Idone said he understands runners and others who preferred the simple …

Snapshot: Finishing Touches on Erie Street

Crews put down parking striping

The majority of Erie Street is just about finished and ready for cars to park and drive on after months of construction. Street crews put down paint to mark the parking spots on the reconstructed downtown street today. The road, between South Water and South DePeyster streets, also got its final coating of pavement this week. But there are still a few final touches to be done, such as brick work detailing pedestrian crossings at Acorn Alley and the intersection with South Water Street. RELATED COVERAGE:
